As a long-time fan of Matthew Vaughn’s cinematic masterpieces, I can confidently say that his unique blend of action, humor, and visual style has never failed to captivate me. The recent addition of both Kingsman movies on Netflix is like finding a hidden treasure for me, as it allows me to revisit the adventures of Harry Hart and Eggsy Unwin whenever I want.
Matthew Vaughn’s film “Argylle,” featuring Henry Cavill, didn’t quite hit its mark this year, but it doesn’t diminish the fact that his earlier works continue to be popular among fans. This is evident by the swift rise of Vaughn’s first two “Kingsman” movies on Netflix, which are now climbing high in global movie rankings.
It appears that the movies “Kingsman: The Secret Service” and its follow-up “Kingsman: The Golden Circle” have rediscovered a dedicated fanbase on the platform. Many viewers seem eager to revisit the escapades of Colin Firth’s character Harry Hart and Taron Egerton’s Gary “Eggsy” Unwin once more. With Vaughn’s unique mix of high-octane action, eccentric humor, and a striking visual aesthetic, it’s clear that even a decade after its initial cinema release, the “Kingsman” series remains as captivating as ever.
2014 saw the debut of “Kingsman: The Secret Service,” a film that garnered numerous positive reviews and grossed over $400 million at the box office, an impressive feat considering its budget was around $80-90 million. Blending aspects from James Bond movies while adding a unique twist by Vaughn, the movie resonated with global audiences. Naturally, this success paved the way for the sequel in 2017: “Kingsman: The Golden Circle.” This installment further developed the Kingsman universe and managed to replicate its predecessor’s box office performance. However, compared to the initial film, critics and viewers seemed less enthusiastic about Vaughn’s bold and frenetic style in this sequel, with some expressing a diminished interest rather swiftly.
The Kingsman Franchise Continues Despite Diminishing Returns
As a passionate film enthusiast, I couldn’t help but feel elated when Kingsman: The Golden Circle raked in impressive box office numbers, paving the way for Matthew Vaughn to revisit the franchise in 2021. Instead of a sequel, he decided to take us back in time with a prequel film, titled The King’s Man. This gripping tale unfolds during the era of World War I and features an ensemble cast including Ralph Fiennes, Gemma Arterton, and Rhys Ifans.
Despite Vaughn’s costly flop with Argylle, a film that shares some ties but not quite the full Kingsman franchise, there are still two Kingsman films in development. The Blue Blood, a sequel to The Golden Circle, is rumored to be the concluding chapter of this trilogy. On the other hand, The King’s Man: The Traitor King, will continue the storyline from the prequel movie and is expected to build upon the post-credits scene of the 2021 film, which introduced Adolf Hitler into an increasingly chaotic scenario.
The ongoing popularity of Vaughn’s original Kingsman films on Netflix is undeniably boosting the anticipated arrival of the upcoming sequels. Nowadays, satisfying streaming subscribers carries just as much weight as ticket sales at the box office. Although it remains uncertain if Vaughn’s planned Argylle trilogy will continue following the movie’s lukewarm reception, fans of the director still have a lot to anticipate in the future.
Currently streaming on Netflix, you can enjoy “Kingsman: The Secret Service” and its sequel, “Kingsman: The Golden Circle”. If you’re an Apple TV+ subscriber, don’t miss out on “Argylle”.
