As a devoted fan of the original Orphan Black series, I must admit that I was eagerly anticipating the spin-off, Orphan Black: Echoes. The anticipation was palpable, especially given the success and critical acclaim of the 2013 series. However, much like the clone sisters in the show, my hopes were tragically split apart by the news that Echoes has been canceled after just one season.
The spin-off show from Orphan Black, titled by AMC, has been terminated after airing only one season. Many anticipated that the series would pull in large viewership due to its predecessor’s success, which debuted in 2013 and was led by Tatiana Maslany. Unfortunately, the first season of 10 episodes received mixed feedback, and it appears that these reviews didn’t translate into sufficient ratings for a renewal, as suggested by Deadline.
For five seasons between 2013 and 2017, the series Orphan Black garnered strong viewership and critical acclaim, with its lead actress Tatiana Maslany eventually winning an Emmy in 2016 after three nominations. The show also boasts a high Tomatometer score of 93% and a Popcornmeter approval rating of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. Unfortunately, the latest installment Orphan Black: Echoes did not receive as much praise, managing only a “fresh” critic’s score of 60% and a low audience approval rating of 47%.
The show continues the tale from Orphan Black, leaping forward 37 years in time. Although Tatiana Maslany is not featured, her on-screen daughter from the initial series, Kira Manning, takes center stage. Keeley Hawes assumes the character’s role (previously played by Skyler Wexler), and she, along with her spouse, strive to help Krysten Ritter’s Lucy recover her lost memories.
Although numerous reviews commended Orphan Black: Echoes for avoiding being too similar to the initial series, there was often criticism that this spin-off couldn’t quite capture the same level of intrigue and enigma as its predecessor. It appears that perhaps attempting to emulate the highly acclaimed original series might have been a challenge with only one possible result.
Krysten Ritter Wanted to Emulate Tatiana Maslany’s Orphan Black Performance
Back when “Orphan Black: Echoes” hit our screens, I couldn’t help but share my thoughts on why I chose to be part of this spin-off. The truth is, Tatiana Maslany’s breathtaking performance in the original series left me utterly inspired and captivated – it was nothing short of epic! In an interview with ComicBook, I opened up about this very experience.
10 years back, I caught the show mainly due to Tatiana Maslany’s outstanding acting. Her performances were consistently captivating and deserving of recognition, which is why I had already heard about her numerous nominations at that time.
As an actress, I found it intriguing to portray a character with unconventional emotions and memories. This role presented a complex exploration of identity, the interplay between nature and nurture, love’s depth, and its manifestation in various scenarios. It was these thought-provoking themes that attracted me when I received the part.
Despite Ritter not trying to mimic Manson’s performance in creating her character, it was unfortunate that the storyline fell short and failed to reach the heights previously achieved. Consequently, Orphan Black: Echoes has sadly become part of the expanding collection of series that have been relegated to the category of one-season wonders.
