As a lifelong fan of Indian cinema, I must say that the selection of Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao’s “Laapataa Ladies” as India’s official entry for the Oscars 2025 is nothing short of exhilarating! Growing up, I remember eagerly awaiting each new release from this dynamic duo, and to see them competing on the global stage is a dream come true.

Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao’s movie “Laapataa Ladies” has been selected as India’s representative for the Oscars 2025. This is a momentous accomplishment not just for the filmmakers and actors, but for the whole country. Upon hearing this news, Aamir Khan expressed his pride in Kiran Rao and her entire team, stating that their efforts have finally been rewarded as the movie advances to the Oscars.

Aamir happily announced, “We’re overjoyed about the news! I couldn’t be more proud of Kiran and her dedicated team. I want to extend my sincere thanks to the Film Federation of India’s selection committee for picking our movie to represent India at the Oscars. My heartfelt appreciation goes out to our audience, media, and the entire film community for their unwavering love and support towards Laapata Ladies. I am grateful to Jio and Netflix for being wonderful collaborators. It brings me immense joy that all our effort has been worthwhile. Thank you everyone! Here’s hoping that Laapata Ladies wins the affection of the Academy members.

A 13-member committee from The Film Federation of India, led by Assamese director Jahnu Barua, selected the Aamir Khan-helmed film as India’s official entry for the 97th Academy Awards during a special event held in Chennai. The film will be competing in the Best Foreign Film category.

It’s important to note that the prestigious list featured films such as Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal, the Malayalam National Award winner Aattam, the Tamil film Maharaja, Cannes Film Festival winner All We Imagine As Light and Telugu titles like Kalki 2898 AD and Hanu-Man. Additionally, Yami Gautam’s Article 370 and Randeep Hooda’s Swatantraya Veer Savarkar were also part of the competition.

In a fresh twist, Kiran Rao’s second directorial endeavor, titled Laapataa Ladies, was released after her 2010 film Dhobi Ghat. This heartfelt production stars Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, and Ravi Kishan. The story focuses on the lives of two newly married brides. It made its debut earlier in March this year and can now be streamed on Netflix.
