Laapataa Ladies: Kiran Rao says ‘time to ask' Aamir Khan as she spills beans on campaign till Oscars 2025 finale; 'I am certainly new to it'

As an ardent fan of Kiran Rao’s cinematic brilliance, I am absolutely thrilled to witness her journey as Laapataa Ladies, her masterpiece, is selected as India’s official entry for the prestigious Oscars 2025. The road to the Academy Awards is paved with challenges, but Kiran’s determination and the support of industry giants like Aamir Khan and Ashutosh Gowariker make this journey seem less daunting.

Kiran Rao is currently thrilled because her film, Laapataa Ladies, has been chosen as India’s entry for the Oscars 2025. Although being nominated for the Academy Awards is a major accomplishment, the campaign process is vital in making it to the finals. Now, Rao has disclosed her strategies, admitting that this is all new to her and she will need to seek assistance from Aamir Khan and Ashutosh Gowariker, who previously gained an Oscar nomination for Lagaan.

In an interview with India Today, Rao discussed the impending campaign for Laapataa Ladies as the Oscars approached. She expressed that they were fortunate to have AKP, Jio Studios, Netflix, among other notable studios, involved in the production and journey of this film. She went on to mention that they would soon be devising a strategy and planning the campaign. She acknowledged that it was a daunting task due to the diverse representation of countries, making it not just about expertise but also budget management, positioning the film effectively, reaching Academy members, and garnering significant publicity.

She remarked, “This trip is lengthy, and I must admit, I’m a novice on it. I saw it 24 years ago with Lagaan, but I didn’t participate in the movement back then. Now is the right moment for me to consult Ashu and Aamir about their experiences, learn from them, and gain some insights.

At a notable occasion held in Chennai, a 13-person panel from The Film Federation of India, led by Assamese director Jahnu Barua, chose Aamir Khan’s movie as India’s representative entry for the 97th Academy Awards. This film will battle it out in the Best International Feature Film category.

This distinguished lineup showcased a variety of standout movies such as “Animal,” starring Ranbir Kapoor, “Aattam,” which won the Malayalam National Award, the Tamil movie “Maharaja,” the Cannes Film Festival winner “All We Imagine As Light,” and the Telugu films “Kalki 2898 AD” and “Hanu-Man.” Furthermore, “Swatantraya Veer Savarkar” featuring Randeep Hooda and “Article 370” starring Yami Gautam were also in contention.

Kiran Rao’s most recent directorial project, titled Laapataa Ladies, is her second film since she debuted with Dhobi Ghat in 2010. The movie features Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, and Ravi Kishan in leading roles. This film centers around the narrative of two newlywed brides. It held its first screening in March of this year and is now available for streaming on Netflix.
