As a huge fan of Lady Gaga and her incredible talent, I can’t help but be thrilled about her latest role as Harley Quinn in “Joker: Folie À Deux.” Her recent interview with Empire magazine sheds light on the unique challenges she faced while preparing for this part. Unlike her persona as Lady Gaga, the singer-songwriter-actress admits that portraying Harley required a new approach to singing and acting.
Lady Gaga is undeniably a global phenomenon. However, she confessed that acting as Joaquin Phoenix’s love interest in Todd Phillips’ anticipated “Joker: Folie À Deux” was an entirely unique experience for her. The GRAMMY winner is no stranger to stealing the limelight on stage. But her creative prowess reached new heights when she starred in the 2018 remake of “A Star is Born,” working alongside Bradley Cooper. In a recent interview with Empire magazine, Gaga shared her thoughts about portraying Harley Quinn to Arthur Fleck:
“You all recognize me as Lady Gaga in my performances, correct? But for this film, I’m portraying a character. To embody Lee authentically, I had to adjust my singing style significantly, distinguishing it from my usual performer’s voice. How do you seamlessly blend music with dialogue instead of abruptly breaking into song? This experience was entirely new to me.”
In the same interview, Lady Gaga described her experience of playing the character Lee, also known as Harley Quinn, in “Joker: Folie À Deux”:
As a trained singer with years of experience performing on stage, I can honestly say that taking on the role of a less musically skilled artist like Lee was both challenging and liberating for me. When I step onto the stage to sing, I’m meticulous about my breathing technique, ensuring it’s controlled and consistent to hit the right notes at the correct rhythm and duration. It’s a process honed through years of practice and dedication to my craft.
Todd Phillips Says Make Way for a Whole New Harley Quinn
Lady Gaga has given a sneak peek of her portrayal as beloved character Harley Quinn in “Joker: Folie à Deux,” which was introduced in “Batman: The Animated Series” more than three decades ago. However, Todd Phillips, the film’s director, emphasizes that their adaptation of Harley Quinn from DC Comics is unique and represents Lady Gaga’s personal take on the role. Phillips clarified this during an interview with Empire.
“Although there are certain aspects of her character that might remind people of her, Lady Gaga’s portrayal is largely our own creation, as well as Scott Silver’s. she assumed the role of a charismatic figure, similar to how Charles Manson was idolized by his female followers in prison. In the film, there are elements inspired by the comic book character Harley, but we shaped these elements according to our vision.”
According to the famed Louis Armstrong song “When You’re Smiling,” the world is filled with excitement as fans look forward to the upcoming musical collaboration between Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn and Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck, in this autumn’s highly anticipated sequel to 2019’s Joker.
Joker: Folie À Deux
