Lanterns: DC Series Eyes Aaron Pierre, Stephan James for John Stewart

As a seasoned cinephile with a penchant for comic book adaptations and a soft spot for characters of color making their mark on the silver screen, I can hardly contain my excitement about the impending casting decision for John Stewart in the upcoming Green Lantern series, Lanterns. Having grown up watching Justice League Unlimited and marveling at the resilience of this African-American superhero, it’s heartening to see that the DC Studios is finally bringing John Stewart to life on the big screen.

The production company behind the upcoming Green Lantern series, titled “Lanterns,” has almost finalized its choices for John Stewart. Among the contenders are Aaron Pierre from “Rebel Ridge” and Stephan James who starred in “If Beale Street Could Talk.” Although Hal Jordan is often recognized as the iconic Green Lantern in comics, it’s John Stewart that many casual viewers might be familiar with, thanks to his appearances in popular animated series such as “Justice League,” “Justice League Unlimited,” and “Static Shock.” Created by writer Dennis O’Neil and artist Neal Adams, John Stewart first appeared in the second volume of “Green Lantern” in December 1971, making him DC Comics’ inaugural African-American superhero. For years, fans have eagerly anticipated seeing this character make his live-action debut, and it seems that the casting process is nearing its end.

Based on The Hollywood Reporter’s report, Aaron Pierre and Stephan James are potential candidates for the role of John Stewart in the upcoming film Lanterns. Aaron Pierre has gained recognition with his roles in Rebel Ridge and will voice Young Mufasa in this year’s Mufasa: The Lion King. Prior to this, he played Dev-Em in the series Krypton within the DC Universe. Stephan James is renowned for his performances in Homecoming, Race, and If Beale Street Could Talk (2018), and currently stars in the sci-fi series Beacon 23 on Prime Video. However, Damson Idris, who was also being considered, is no longer a contender for the role, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

The selection process for the “Lanterns” film is progressing, and it was announced this week that Kyle Chandler has been chosen to portray Hal Jordan. Originally, Josh Brolin, Matthew McConaughey, and Ewan McGregor were in contention for the role. Notably, both Pierre and James are being considered for John Stewart, although another unnamed actor could also secure the part – much like Chandler unexpectedly landed the Hal Jordan role. The character of John Stewart may prove crucial for the DC Universe in the future. Previous reports suggested that while Chandler will depict Hal Jordan in “Lanterns”, his contract does not include a movie clause, leading some to speculate that Hal might perish, with John Stewart serving as the primary Green Lantern in James Gunn’s DCU.

It appears that with Isabela Merced set to portray Hawkgirl in the upcoming Superman film, director James Gunn might be assembling a Justice League lineup reminiscent of the animated series, which featured a romantic connection between these characters. This could be why the choice for John Stewart is leaning towards a younger actor, not only to create an experienced-rookie dynamic with Hal Jordan, but also to cultivate the romantic relationship between Hawkgirl and John Stewart. We may learn who will play John Stewart in the DCU within the next few days, as Lanterns is planning to start filming in 2025, aiming for a 2026 release on HBO.
