Laraine Newman Slams ‘The Bear’ for Being in Emmys Comedy Categories

As a die-hard fan who has spent decades immersed in the world of comedy, I find myself at odds with the Emmys’ classification of The Bear. While I appreciate the show’s undeniable brilliance and its remarkable success, it seems to me that this gripping, heart-wrenching drama is not a comedy – not even a dark one.

Laraine Newman isn’t holding back her thoughts on the Emmy-winning series The Bear.

On Sunday evening, a former cast member of Saturday Night Live voiced criticism on platform X towards the FX/Hulu popular comedy series, as they felt it was inappropriate to compete in the comedy categories during the 2024 Emmy Awards.

Whenever I ponder ‘The Bear’ being nominated in the comedy section for the Emmys, it feels like a stomach ulcer is forming,” Newman expressed.

During the later part of the ceremony, The Bear established a new record by winning the most awards in one season for a comedy, beating its own record from last year when it won 10. Interestingly, the actress expressed her feelings about this in a now-deleted tweet by exclaiming, “Oh, the frustration! The Bear!!!!!!!” or simply, “What a nuisance, that bear!!!”.

Later on, I took to Twitter to clear up any confusion, stating, “In my opinion, The Bear is an exceptional series, but it’s not a comedy – not even a dark one.

This year, Hannah Einbinder, daughter of Newman, received a nomination for best supporting actress in a comedy series for her performance on Hacks. However, the Emmy award for this category ended up being given to Liza Colón-Zayas for her outstanding work in The Bear. This win was significant as it marked the first time a Latina has taken home this particular award.

Hacks, however, in a surprise move, then went on to win the best comedy award of the night.

Due to the immense success of “The Bear” when it debuted in 2022 and its subsequent acclaim among Television Academy members, many experts have debated whether this series should be classified as a comedy, considering its serious themes and lack of typical comedic moments. Despite this, viewers have consistently placed it in the comedy category throughout its run. It remains unclear if the upcoming third season, which seems to be its least humorous installment, will continue to categorize itself as a comedy or switch to drama. In some instances, when a production is significantly miscategorized, the TV Academy may intervene and compel a change in classification – for example, “Orange Is the New Black” was moved from comedy to drama halfway through its run, while “Shameless” was switched from drama to comedy.

This year, the show starring Jeremy Allen White garnered an impressive 23 Emmy nominations, breaking the record for a comedy series. So far at the 2024 Emmys, The Bear has already taken home four awards, among which are Moss-Bachrach’s win in the category of best supporting actor in a comedy series and White’s triumph for best actor in a comedy series.

The 2024 Emmy Awards, jointly hosted by Eugene Levy and Dan Levy, took place last Sunday evening at the Peacock Theater situated within L.A. LIVE in downtown Los Angeles.
