86-year-old Denis Arndt, the well-known character actor recognized from shows like L.A. Law, Picket Fences, and others produced by David E. Kelley, and who earned a Tony nomination for his performance alongside Mary-Louise Parker in the Broadway play Heisenberg, has sadly passed away.
Arndt died Tuesday at his longtime cabin home in Ashland, Oregon, his family announced.
Back in 1988, I had the chance to step into a role on the CBS sitcom “Annie McGuire,” where I became Mary Tyler Moore’s on-screen husband. Fast forward a few years, Adrien Brody joined the cast as my character’s son. Additionally, I was part of the captivating interrogation scene with Sharon Stone in Paul Verhoeven’s masterpiece “Basic Instinct” (1992), where I found myself among the officers mesmerized by Catherine Tramell.
Initially, Arndt joined Kelley on the NBC series ‘L.A. Law’, portraying attorney Jack Sollers, who enters during season five (1990-91). His character appears to defend Rosalind Shays, a character played by Diana Muldaur, in her sexual discrimination lawsuit against McKenzie Brackman.
Over four seasons (1993-96), he appeared as a different lawyer, Franklin Dell, on the CBS show “Picket Fences.” Later, Kelley would call upon him for roles in various other series such as “Chicago Hope,” “Ally McBeal,” “The Practice,” “Boston Public,” “Boston Legal,” and “Mr. Mercedes.”

77-year-old Arndt made his one and only appearance on Broadway, earning praise for his portrayal of the Irish butcher Alex Priest in Simon Stephens’ play “Heisenberg.” The production premiered at Manhattan Theatre Club in June 2015 and moved to Broadway’s Samuel J. Friedman Theatre 15 months later.
In the spring of 2015, Arndt landed the role just four days prior to rehearsals commencing, as Kenneth Welsh had to withdraw. Arndt’s character, Alex, found himself in an unexpected romance with Georgie (played by Parker), and he was nominated for a Tony Award in the category of best actor in a play.
In his review for “Heisenberg” published in The New York Times, Ben Brantley praised Arndt’s performance as the most surprising and captivating Broadway debut of the year. Arndt brought a simmering, initially subtle intensity to the character of a man who mysteriously wept at times without clear reason. Despite appearing to be a confirmed bachelor, Arndd’s portrayal of Alex exuded a soft, undeniable allure. He skillfully ensured that Alex was never overpowered by Georgie’s persistent, aggressive advances.
For me, the appeal of the July/December romance stemmed from Alex’s vulnerability. I found myself drawn to someone who wasn’t shielded by defenses but open and accepting. The chemistry between the characters was what really captured my interest.
As a passionate admirer, let me share some fascinating facts about Denis Leroy Arndt: Born on the 23rd of February, 1939, in the picturesque town of Issaquah, Washington, which lies close to Seattle. He served valiantly in the Vietnam War as a helicopter pilot for the U.S. Army, demonstrating extraordinary courage and dedication that earned him two Purple Hearts and a Commendation Medal.
Following his completion of university studies at the University of Washington, he spent several years flying helicopters in Alaska before eventually returning to Seattle. During this time, while overseeing an apartment building, a friend encouraged him to try out for a role in a local play. As a result, Arndt became one of the founding members of the Intiman Theatre, which was established in 1972.
In 1974, he had a few television appearances, but it was not until the mid-1980s that his career took off with roles in the TV series “Crime Story” and “Wiseguy.
Apart from his role as Dr. Bill Augustine in the fifth and final season of NBC’s Providence in 2002, Arndt has been involved with various television shows over the years, including The Wonder Years, Murder, She Wrote, Life Goes On, Herman’s Head, Touched by an Angel, The District, 24, Supernatural, Grey’s Anatomy, and The Good Fight, to name a few.
His large-screen filmography boasts titles such as “Distant Thunder” from 1988, “How to Make an American Quilt” in 1995, “Metro” and “Bandidas”, both from 1997, and “Undisputed” in 2006.
Arndt performed in regional theaters all over the country from the 70’s onwards. Notably, he was a part of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival starting in 1976, where he played key roles like King Lear, Titus Andronicus, Coriolanus, Othello, A Moon for the Misbegotten, Long Day’s Journey Into Night, and, in his final performance in 2014, The Tempest.

From the 70’s onwards, Arndt graced regional stages across the nation. Of particular note is his tenure with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival beginning in 1976, where he took on iconic roles such as King Lear, Titus Andronicus, Coriolanus, Othello, A Moon for the Misbegotten, Long Day’s Journey Into Night, and, in his swansong performance of 2014, The Tempest.
Among those who carry on his legacy are his wife Magee, whom he married 45 years ago; his children Scott, Tammy, Laurie, Kirsten, Bryce, McKenna, and Tanner; as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and even great-great-grandchildren.
Instead of sending flowers as a tribute, I’d encourage you to seize life boldly, just like he did, and chase your dreams with unrelenting passion.
Asked in a 2017 interview what kept him motivated, Arndt replied:
In a room where a tale is being shared, you can sense that everyone’s minds are fully engaged, as if they were living the story themselves. You recognize this feeling. My inspiration lies in the profound, emotional connection that emerges between the storyteller and listener, an unscripted interaction.
