Samuel David Moore, born on October 12, 1935, in Miami, grew up with a preacher as his father and sang in the family backyard. He encountered Dave Prater at Miami’s King of Heart’s club in 1961, and they were soon signed to Roulette Records. The duo, Sam & Dave, unveiled their first major hit, “You Don’t Know Like I Know,” in 1965. Their most famous song, “Soul Man” (released in 1978), has been prominently featured in numerous films and TV shows like The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and One Trick Pony, while “Hold On I’m Coming” can be found in diverse productions ranging from The Umbrella Academy to the original Blues Brothers. In essence, Moore’s soulful music left an indelible impact on pop culture in various ways.
