Longlegs Breaks Box Office Records for Neon, Indie Horror

As a horror movie enthusiast who has witnessed countless box office disappointments in the genre, I can’t help but be thoroughly impressed by the unprecedented success of “Longlegs.” Having followed its progress since its opening weekend, I’ve been captivated by its dominance at the box office.

Over the past three weeks, Longlegs has emerged as an impressive box office hit. Its success was evident from the start when it delivered Neon’s best opening weekend ever. In contrast to many horror films that struggle after their initial release, Longlegs has maintained a steady audience, achieving another significant box office achievement in its third weekend.

As a passionate fan, I’m thrilled to share that according to Deadline, the horror movie “Longlegs” has surpassed all independent horrors of the last decade in terms of domestic box office earnings. With a current total of $58.6 million, it outshines the previous records held by “Talk To Me” ($48.2 million), “Insidious: Chapter 3” ($52.2 million), and “Hereditary” ($44 million). Notably, “Talk To Me” and “Hereditary” are productions from indie studio A24, whereas “Insidious: Chapter 3” was distributed by Universal’s Focus. Moreover, “Longlegs” holds the title for Neon’s highest-grossing domestic release, surpassing the $53.3 million earned by “Parasite” in 2019.

Longlegs Has Seen Respectable Returns Since its Opening Weekend

I’m amazed by the success of “Longlegs” as a fan! With a worldwide gross of $66.7 million, it ranks third among the highest-grossing horror films this year, trailing behind “A Quiet Place: Day One” ($253 million) and “Exhuma” ($97 million). What’s more astounding is that this chilling masterpiece was produced with a meager $10 million budget. After its record-breaking $22.4 million opening weekend, it was already raking in significant profits. The solid reviews and genuine audience intrigue have kept the box office numbers high, with only a minimal 50% drop since then – an impressive feat for the horror genre!

In recent years, independent horror films have been making a big splash at the box office. Two examples of these successful movies are “Hereditary” and “Talk To Me,” which received excellent critiques from film critics during their respective summer releases. Despite receiving below average CinemaScores from opening-day audiences, both “Hereditary” and “Longlegs” managed to captivate moviegoers. The former earned a D+ rating at the time of release, while the latter received a C+. “Talk To Me” performed slightly better with a B+ CinemaScore.

Osgood Perkins penned and helmed the thriller “Longlegs,” which centers on FBI agent Lee Harker, portrayed by Maika Monroe, in her mission to apprehend a cunning serial killer named “Longlegs” (Nicolas Cage). This elusive killer has left behind a trail of murdered families without setting foot at the crime scenes. Joining Monroe and Cage are acting veterans Alicia Witt and Blair Underwood in this intriguing cast.

Longlegs is currently playing in theaters nationwide.
