Lucky’s Unforgettable Role in ‘One of Them Days’ Deserves a Spinoff Movie!

Spoilers for One of Them Days lie ahead, so read on at your own discretion.

Thus far in the 2025 movie lineup, some outstanding films have been unveiled. One standout movie that might just become my favorite of the year so far is “One of Them Days“, a buddy comedy featuring Keke Palmer and SZA. This film is superbly directed and provides an impressive platform for the acting talents of its main actors. Additionally, it boasts several entertaining supporting characters, one of whom I believe could carry their own movie.

In the review for TopMob’s “One of Them Days,” it is pointed out that the film benefits significantly from the powerful performances of its leading actors. Yet, it doesn’t overlook the exceptional supporting cast, which features Vanessa Bell Calloway, Lil Rel Howery, Maude Apatow, Dewayne Perkins, and Katt Williams in a memorable role as a homeless man known as Lucky. This character consistently brings laughs to the screen, and there’s a compelling case to be made for giving him a spinoff series.

What’s Lucky’s Role In One Of Them Days?

In the movie, Lucky appears quite promptly, immediately catching attention. This wandering character encounters Dreux and Alyssa (portrayed by Keke Palmer and SZA) as they approach Payday Whenever for a loan. Prior to their entry into the building, Lucky stands in their way, attempting to discourage them from accepting a loan because of its high interest rates and other concerns. Even after they refuse his counsel, he continues to warn them from outside.

In the movie, Katt Williams’ character reappears later, as Alyssa, needing money, attempts a daring feat to retrieve a valuable pair of Air Jordans hung high on a power line. Lucky’s amusing take on this predicament resonates with many viewers, and it seems his concern for Alyssa’s safety mirrored that of the audience watching in the theater, who couldn’t help but exclaim, “Come down from there, Alyssa!” while watching the film.

Beyond adding humor, Lucky also shows sincere care for Dreux and Alyssa’s personal growth. This is evident when, at their impromptu community art show, he expresses admiration for their business acumen, hinting that he considers himself a significant influence in their lives. To some, Lucky might seem like a character who prefers brevity, but I believe he possesses the traits to be the main character of his own narrative.

Why Should Lucky Receive His Own Feature Film?

To create a standalone production featuring a character from an established IP, it’s essential that the character is intrinsically captivating, and if it’s a comedy franchise, they should be particularly amusing. Lucky is just such a character as his inherent humor shines in specific ways. His eccentric demeanor combines humor with endearment, while his unwavering pursuit of decorum in unusual situations adds to his allure. For instance, you can almost hear him pleading with Alyssa to “take heed” as she tries to get King Lolo’s Jordans.

Another reason that Dreux and Alyssa’s unanticipated spirit guide could star in a movie is that he’s portrayed by a skilled comedic performer – Katt Williams. It’s not an exaggeration to acknowledge that Katt Williams possesses an abundance of comedic talent. He can deliver uproarious humor through physical comedy or generate laughter with witty one-liners, and at times, he even improvises.

From my perspective as a film enthusiast, Lucky might initially appear to be a minimalist character, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. Despite his eccentricities, he demonstrates remarkable insight, which is strikingly clear in his interactions. More importantly, he shows genuine concern for people, particularly one of the main female characters in “One of Them Days.” In essence, Lucky is a complex character skillfully portrayed by a comedy legend, offering depth and nuance that keeps us engaged.

What Should A Lucky-Led Movie Be About?

There are numerous avenues for storytelling regarding Lucky, considering his aim to provide wisdom to others. A potential starting point for the tale might be that Lucky attempts to guide a band of young individuals through a challenge within a single day, unaware that the issue is far larger and more perilous than he could have imagined. As the adventure unfolds, it may lead to extraordinary circumstances, but Lucky could also gain self-understanding and make progress in his personal life.

More on One of Them Days

I wasn’t surprised that “Nocturnal” starring Keke Palmer is doing well in theatres, but I didn’t anticipate being so deeply touched by a particular aspect of the movie.

I’ve laid out some general ideas, but it’s a good foundation for a concept, don’t you think? As for what we could call this potential spinoff movie, the ideal title would be ‘Lucky Day’.

Absolutely, for a sequel or spinoff of the movie “One of Them Days” to occur, there needs to be an audience interest, and given its impressive box office earnings of $51 million worldwide against a budget of only $14 million, I strongly believe that TriStar, Issa Rae, and their team should consider this possibility. While it’s still early days, the success of the original film suggests there could be potential for a sequel that brings back Katt Williams as Lucky in another captivating movie reminiscent of classic “day-in-the-hood” films. Let’s hope and keep our fingers crossed!

For the time being, why not take advantage of your Netflix account and watch “One of Them Days” right away? It’s bound to make you laugh, feel a bit awkward (but in a pleasant way), and maybe even teach you something new!
