As a gamer who has seen Idiocracy multiple times, I can honestly say that if given the chance, Luke Wilson would leap at the opportunity to reprise his role as Joe Bauers. The actor’s enthusiasm for a sequel is infectious, and his ideas for a present-day reunion with Terry Crews and Dax Shepard are intriguing.
Luke Wilson would reprise his Idiocracy role as Joe Bauers in a heartbeat.
The actor who acted alongside Dax Shepard, Maya Rudolph, and Terry Crews in the 2006 movie directed by Mike Judge, has shared with Business Insider that he frequently proposes sequel concepts to the movie’s director.
Wilson shared, “I usually reach out to Mike and propose an idea to him. He’s constantly swamped with work on his scripts, but I’ve been suggesting this: let’s bring Terry Crews, Dax Shepard, and myself back to the present era. In this scenario, Terry’s character Camacho becomes president, while Dax’s character runs a film studio. Mike seems to enjoy these pitches.
In “Idiocracy,” we follow the story of Bauer, an ordinary American citizen, who gets chosen for a top-secret military hibernation experiment but is inadvertently left behind. He awakens 500 years later to find himself in a future that’s incredibly dumbed down, making him the smartest person alive by far.
The actor from “Legally Blonde” mentioned that the cult classic satire was an unexpected success and one of the most surprising moments in his career. Despite 20th Century Fox initially pulling it from wide release, the movie only made less than $1 million at the box office. However, its fanbase continued to grow, allowing it to find its audience nonetheless.
Wilson expressed that the film, “Idiocracy”, appeared quite peculiar and amusing to him. He’s a big fan of Mike Judge, having known him from Austin. Wilson appreciates Judge’s unique, offbeat humor, but wasn’t sure if it would resonate with others. Additionally, Fox wasn’t providing the necessary funds for special effects and set pieces.
The “No Good Deed” actor recounted, “I’ll always remember I was flipping through the LA Times before the movie premiered, and I spotted a tiny ad for Idiocracy, listing only three cinemas. So I reached out to Mike Judge, who informed me the studio had abandoned the film. I was disheartened. Yet, I was astounded when it gained popularity. It’s the movie that people most frequently mention to me, not just during election seasons but throughout the years. What makes it so special is that it managed to resonate despite a studio trying to suppress it.
