The private equity firm L Catterton, which is supported by LVMH (Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton SE), has taken over the majority ownership of the Japanese fashion brand KAPITAL.
As a devoted admirer, I recently came across exciting news on the company’s official site – they’ve confirmed that 2024 will mark their investment year! Although the precise figure for the majority stake hasn’t been revealed yet, this strategic partnership with L Catterton and KAPITAL promises a promising future. This significant move comes just before our beloved brand celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2025, which is less than a year after the passing of our founder, Toshikiyo Hirata, in April 2024. I can hardly wait to see how this collaboration unfolds!
KAPITAL, a denim label, officially started in 1985, nestled within Kojima – a district renowned as the cradle of Japanese denim in Okayama prefecture, Japan. Initially established by Hirata-san in 1948 during his time as a karate instructor in the United States, he drew inspiration from the American denim style. Being among the pioneering Japanese collectors who ventured to America seeking “vintage gold,” he later honed his denim crafting skills in Kojima during the ’80s.
