As a seasoned movie reviewer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that Mark Collie‘s performance as Harry Heck in “The Punisher” is a testament to his versatility as an actor. His portrayal of a complex villain was captivating and left a lasting impression on viewers. It’s fascinating to see how he has evolved since then, from gritty action flicks to the small-screen drama of “Landman.
More modern hits such as “Deadpool” and “Logan” have demonstrated that superhero movies can continue to earn huge profits even with a mature R-rating. One of the initial Marvel superheroes to explore an adults-only MPAA rating was the vengeful and dark Punisher, who first appeared in 1989 played by Dolph Lundgren (“Rocky IV”) and then in 2004 by Thomas Jane (“HBO’s Hung”). As it happens, this film is marking its 20th anniversary. In a recent interview with MovieWeb, one of the co-stars from that movie, veteran actor Mark Collie who portrayed villain Harry Heck in “The Punisher”, spoke to us about their throwback action flick. Currently, Collie is promoting his new series “Landman” and also shared insights about potential future appearances of Heck within the MCU, as well as his thoughts on more recent adaptations of The Punisher.
Collie stated, “I’ve seen some of them, and my good friend Jonathan Hensleigh directed those. His version is what we have, but when it comes to Harry Heck, I’m the one who appears in the Marvel universe if you search for ‘Harry Heck’ online – yes, that’s me! It’s cool because in the original comics, Harry Heck was the one who got killed.” Collie continued:
However, I often find myself reminding Jonathan, “If he does it again, there’s a chance he could only be injured.” And then they frequently bring up, “You know, the Joker always reappears in every movie, right? He can’t really be killed, can he?” So, moving on… that was quite an opportunity for me.
“Arguing” on TV with Billy Bob Thornton
Since the release of “The Punisher”, Colm Meaney has kept himself occupied with various film and television ventures, such as Taylor Sheridan’s latest series on Paramount+ titled “Landman“. In this production, Meaney portrays the character of Sheriff Walt, which provides an entertaining spectacle due to his frequent interactions with a local oil tycoon, played by the renowned Billy Bob Thornton. This relationship often involves friendly encounters and clashes of opinions.
Collie described their interaction as a passionate yet caring dispute, similar to two siblings quarrelling. While he enforces the law, his counterpart is more focused on finding solutions and covering each other’s backs. Despite their disagreements, they share the same goals – protecting and caring for the families who work in potentially hazardous conditions. Collie values this dynamic as it keeps them focused and accountable, and he enjoys working with Billy Bob.
Collie continued, regarding his experience working with Sheridan:
Let me share this with you: Working with Taylor is an exceptional experience. In fact, having worked on major movies myself, I compared it to a contemporary reprisal of James Dean in the movie “Giant”. It’s that impactful, and the explosions are authentic because I’ve been near some real ones.
