Martin Scorsese’s Next Film May Come From a Pulitzer Prize Winner

As a cinephile with a deep appreciation for the intricacies of storytelling and the human condition, I am thrilled at the prospect of Martin Scorsese bringing Marilynne Robinson’s novel “Home” to life on the silver screen. Having been captivated by his adaptation of “Killers of the Flower Moon,” a similarly rural-set tale, I can only imagine the emotional depth and nuance he will bring to this profound exploration of love, death, and faith.

As a fervent admirer, I am thrilled to share that I have several intriguing ventures bubbling up in my creative realm at present. One of these projects is an adaptation titled “The Wager“, inspired by the gripping narrative found within David Grann’s book “The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny, and Murder“. It’s anticipated that the esteemed Leonardo DiCaprio will grace our screens with his presence in this film.

The director initially discussed the project in 2023, revealing he had collaborated on a script with Todd Field, who co-wrote and directed films like ‘Tàr’ and ‘In the Bedroom’, as well as Kent Jones, known for ‘Diane’ and ‘Hitchcock/Truffaut’. Scorsese referenced ‘Home’ once more in an interview with The Canadian Press in November 2024, expressing a high likelihood that it would be his next venture. However, he mentioned a potential scheduling conflict could potentially hinder its production. He did not clarify whether the script co-written with Field and Jones would still be used for the project.

A Novel About “Love and Death and Faith”

Robinson’s novel serves as a complement to her Pulitzer Prize-winning preceding work, titled “Gilead.” According to the synopsis provided by the publisher, Farrar, Straus and Giroux, the story’s foundation is as follows:

Many people were captivated by the radiant singing voice of John Ames in Marilynne Robinson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book ‘Gilead’. The novel ‘Home’, set in the same location but focusing on Reverend Robert Boughton’s household, where John Ames is a dear friend, is an entirely separate and profoundly moving story that unfolds simultaneously.

Thirty-eight-year-old Glory Boughton is back in Gilead, tending to her ailing father. Not long after, her estranged brother Jack, who’s been away for two decades, shows up seeking shelter and attempting to reconcile with a past marked by turmoil and distress.

Jack is one of the great characters in recent literature. A bad boy from childhood, an alcoholic who cannot hold a job, he is perpetually at odds with his surroundings and with his traditionalist father, though he remains Boughton’s most beloved child. Brilliant, lovable, and wayward, Jack forges an intense bond with Glory and engages painfully with Ames, his godfather and namesake.

Home – A Moving and Healing Narrative Exploring Familial Bonds, Hidden Truths, and Generational Transitions; Encompassing Love, Loss, and Faith

A story that explores themes such as love, mortality, and belief appears to be a fitting choice for Scorsese, offering an intriguing continuation after his previous work, “Killers of the Flower Moon“, which also shares a rural setting.

Scorsese might choose to direct a movie that’s more intimate, focusing on tales from his parents’ past experiences as immigrants, which connect to his recent visit to Sicily. This is another possibility he mentioned.

Undeniably, a conversation with Scorsese wouldn’t feel right without bringing up his exciting upcoming projects, particularly his planned adaptation of Shusaku Endo’s novel, “The Life of Jesus“. When asked about the status of this project, he simply replied, “It’s an opportunity I’m considering, but for now, it remains a work in progress.

Only time will tell if
Home
indeed becomes the director’s next project.
