As a passionate film buff, I found George Lucas’ original Star Wars Skywalker saga ending to be quite divisive. Yet, the movie offered some heartwarming final moments for iconic characters like Harrison Ford’s Han Solo and Carrie Fisher’s Leia Organa. Fast forward six years, fans are now getting a more comprehensive and satisfying take on Leia’s tale in Marvel Comics’ adaptation of The Rise of Skywalker.
I’m excited to see how this comic book series expands upon the movie’s ending and provides a more complete narrative for Leia.
Due to the unfortunate death of Carrie Fisher, the filmmakers of The Rise of Skywalker had to piece together her final performance using old footage and CGI, leaving some viewers feeling that Leia’s character didn’t receive the development it deserved. In Marvel’s comic adaptation (Issue 4), Leia’s story concludes as it focuses on General Organa’s efforts to rescue her son, Ben Solo, from the dark side. Since the comic wasn’t hindered by the challenges faced during filmmaking, it offers a more detailed and satisfying ending to Leia’s part in the Star Wars saga.
In the film, Leia only manages to communicate with Ben via the Force by calling his name as he fights Rey on Kef Bir. However, the comic expands her dialogue, allowing her to try convincing Ben to rejoin the light side. This suggests that her character’s role might have been more substantial in future scenes if Carrie Fisher had not unfortunately passed away in 2016.
‘Star Wars’ Seems Ready to Finally Move On From the Skywalker Saga – Kind of
Initially, when George Lucas embarked on creating Star Wars, he harbored a grand aspiration for a nine-film epic. Interestingly, he chose to initiate the narrative in the heart of the story. After the debut of the original trilogy, it appeared that Lucas’ extensive plans might never materialize. However, with time, the Skywalker Saga emerged as the central theme of the franchise, a choice that at times proved problematic.
Following a break from cinema screens, the Star Wars franchise is coming back with a fresh batch of movies, exploring new chapters in the universe, ensuring it remains vibrant rather than drifting off into outer space. Next summer, audiences can look forward to seeing The Mandalorian and Grogu on the big screen, offering a cinematic extension of the Mandalorian era. Additionally, Daisy Ridley is set to reappear in a movie based on the New Jedi Order, ensuring that the legacy of the Skywalker family continues to live on.
Beyond this point, James Mangold is poised to journey thousands of years back in time with a “Dawn of the Jedi” film, Shawn Levy and Ryan Gosling’s “Starfighter” will be a standalone movie, and others like Taika Waititi are also working on distinct contributions to the series. Alongside Ahsoka Season 2, numerous animated series, and Dave Filoni’s “Mandalorian” Era-ending film, there are numerous upcoming Star Wars projects on the horizon, and hopefully, they will prove less contentious than many releases from recent years.
