As a longtime gamer and comic book fan, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia and excitement when I think about the role that Blade and X-Men played in shaping the modern era of superhero movies. These iconic franchises opened up a whole new world for lesser-known characters to shine on the big screen and paved the way for Marvel Studios to take risks with characters like Ant-Man, Guardians of the Galaxy, and even the MCU’s X-Men and Blade.
Kevin Feige is sharing insights into the pivotal superhero films that have formed the foundation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In the past, the prospect of a movie based on a comic book hero might have instilled fear in fans, as exemplified by “Howard the Duck,” “Nick Factor: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” and the 1990 version of “Captain America.” However, Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man” marked a significant shift in both Marvel and superhero films as a whole. Nonetheless, it was the releases of “Blade” in 1998 and “X-Men” in 2000 that laid the groundwork for today’s thriving superhero movie industry.
The influence of the two films is significant, as acknowledged by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige in a recent interview with Deadline. In the lead-up to Marvel’s San Diego Comic-Con appearance, Feige shared how skeptics once dismissed Marvel’s plan to adapt Iron Man, a character initially considered B-list. Feige emphasized that the success of “Blade” and “X-Men” demonstrated that a lesser-known character or top-selling comic book wasn’t what mattered; instead, making the character captivating for audiences was essential. This approach has been consistent with Marvel’s introduction of characters such as Ant-Man, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Captain Marvel to the big screen. Feige explained:
During our trip to Comic-Con in 2007, when we introduced Iron Man with Jon Favreau, a media outlet published an article titled “Marvel’s ‘C’ Team Called Out.” Some people questioned whether Marvel could create successful films based on lesser-known characters without the likes of Spider-Man or X-Men. They assumed Marvel had nothing else to offer. However, we believed otherwise, with a roster of 8,567 other potential heroes!
X-Men and Blade Are Finally Joining the MCU
The influence of “Blade” and “X-Men” was profound in establishing the Marvel Cinematic Universe, leading it to revolutionize the superhero genre. Marvel Studios demonstrated their ability to transform lesser-known comic characters into box office successes. When “Guardians of the Galaxy” started production, they were as unfamiliar as Blade; now, they rank among the most popular Marvel teams. Characters like Captain Marvel, Shang-Chi, and Doctor Strange gained global recognition, surpassing their early 2008 exposure when the MCU was born. History often takes unexpected turns. After producing over a decade of films and shows, Marvel Studios is preparing to bring “X-Men” and “Blade” into this expansive universe.
Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” has been tasked by Marvel Studios to write the script for the upcoming MCU X-Men film.
As a passionate fan, I’ve been eagerly anticipating the return of Blade to the silver screen. But let me tell you, it’s been quite a rollercoaster ride. After Mahershala Ali was announced as Blade at San Diego Comic-Con 2019, things didn’t go smoothly. The project has seen two different directors and numerous screenwriters, leading to several delays. And unfortunately, it looks uncertain if the November 7, 2025 release date will still hold. Yet, with Comic-Con just around the corner once again, there could be exciting updates for both X-Men and Blade that we’ve been waiting for.
