Matthew Gray Gubler’s New CBS Drama Delayed for a Whole Year—Here’s Why Fans Are Upset

CBS has revealed that star Matthew Gray Gubler will feature in the upcoming dramatic series “Einstein”. Interestingly, the network has opted to delay the series premiere to the 2026-27 television season instead.

Due to insufficient room in CBS’s 2025-26 TV schedule, it became necessary for the network to postpone the airing of the Einstein series until the 2026-27 season. Given that Albert Einstein’s great-grandson, Lew Einstein, will follow another genius character played by David Gubler in this version of Einstein, it appears logical for this delay. Previously, a different iteration of the Einstein series was announced by CBS in 2020 but ultimately canceled.

A brilliant yet aimless character named Lew, a great-grandson of Albert Einstein, typically spends his days as a professorial figure at Princeton University, though he’s known for occasional absenteeism. His unconventional behavior often lands him in legal trouble. However, when a local detective requires assistance to solve her most confounding cases, Lew is unexpectedly drafted into action. Known for his intellectual prowess, but plagued by a lack of direction and purpose due to the weight of his famous name, Lew’s involvement in resolving homicides might finally give his life some focus and meaning.

The upcoming American series is inspired by a 2017 German show named “Einstein,” which itself was adapted from a 2015 film penned by Martin Ritzenhoff and Matthias Dinter. The original German series ran between 2017 and 2019, starring Tom Beck, but it ended after its third season. Notably, the new American series will be overseen by Andy Breckman (of Monk fame) as an executive producer, with Randy Zisk taking on directing duties. Additionally, Grubler, Tariq Jalil, Laura Beetz, Rodrigo Herrera Ibarguengoytia, and Rose Hughes are also listed as producers.

What Other New Series’ Are Coming to CBS?

One of the two fresh series that CBS has commissioned is featuring Einstein. Additionally, a comedy titled “DMV,” which is set in the Department of Motor Vehicles, was also announced and is scheduled for this season. The comedy “DMV” will be taking the place of the sitcom “Papa’s House.

Furthermore, the network boasts three distinct spin-offs of several other shows in its lineup: “Em” has a spin-off, as does “CIA”. Additionally, there is another spin-off titled simply “spinoff>”. CBS plans to reveal its official 2025-26 schedule on May 7th.

Einstein is now set to premiere on CBS during the 2026-27 TV season.
