Metaphor: ReFantazio – How to Swap Archetypes

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that Metaphor: ReFantazio has truly captured my heart. Having played every installment of Persona since the series’ inception, I found myself drawn into this new world, not just by its captivating story and stunning visuals, but also by its unique gameplay mechanics.

In a little over a week since its release, ReFantazio has managed to sell a million copies, mirroring the acclaimed success of ATLUS’ renowned Persona series. Unlike other JRPGs that rely on familiar anime stereotypes, this game offers an engaging narrative centered around class disparity and politics.

In this game, the distinctive Archetype system resembles that found in earlier Persona titles. However, rather than featuring characters directly from mythology and folklore, it’s rooted in Carl Jung’s Archetypal model from his psychological studies.

Changing character archetypes isn’t as straightforward if you’re coming from games like Persona 3, 4, and 5 because you can’t switch them during battle. This significant shift in combat mechanics is represented by ReFantazio. This alteration provides more time for strategic planning when confronting tougher opponents, particularly in larger dungeons where HP and MP levels are consistently depleted.

In this guide, we talk about how to optimize swapping between Archetypes.

The Press Turn System

Let’s discuss the reasons behind Swapping Archetype not being as user-friendly as Persona 3, 4, and 5 before we delve into its functioning.

In a different approach, Refantazio replaces the “one more” features from Persona 3, 4, and 5 with the traditional “Press Turn” system, which is well-known among fans of Shin Megami Tensei series.

As a gamer, I can tell you that this mechanic grants us additional chances to act when we pull off strategic moves like exposing weaknesses or landing critical hits. But, beware! These extra actions could backfire if we mess up, such as missing an attack or casting a spell on a resistant foe. In such cases, those turns are wiped out, and it’s the enemy’s turn again.

Instead of Persona’s smooth transition where all party members can act in succession, Metaphor requires you to activate one character at a time during each turn. Unlike Persona’s Baton Pass feature, there are no swaps here, meaning you must strategically decide which team member is best equipped for a given situation before they take action.

Swapping Archetypes

To swap an Archetype, players must enter the Akademia. This place serves as your ‘imaginary hub’ when learning about Archetypes and unlocking more. It is unlocked automatically when playing through the story, more specifically after your awakening.

Conversing with More gives you the ability to effortlessly change Character Types. However, don’t be fooled; this isn’t a simple process. To access stronger and unique variations of Character Types, you’ll need to forge relationships with other individuals during your travels. For instance, Gallica can grant you the Mage’s Archetype, while Strohl may endow you with the Warrior’s power.

Inside Akademia, once an Archetype is unlocked, you can easily switch between them. Since unlocking an Archetype for the first time requires MAG, it’s wise to stock up on these magic currencies before selecting your next one. After that, a stylish animation will play, awakening your character with its newfound power.

Ranking Up More

More’s presence is a complete mystery. However, his knowledge of the arcane is beneficial for our journey.

Boosting More’s Bond Level up to Level 2 streamlines the process of changing Archetypes. This improvement allows you to navigate straight to the Archetype Tree from the main menu, and by pressing ‘Start’, you can skip the trip to the Phantom and go directly to Akademia.

To optimize your progress, it’s advisable to advance your character levels quickly, particularly focusing on reaching the Healer Archetype at level 10 initially. However, keep in mind that this might require a bit extra effort on your part. Once unlocked, this special bond with Maria will be beneficial for you, so aim to do it promptly as well.
