Michael Keaton Says There’s a “Strong Possibility” Marvel and DC Universes Wouldn’t Exist Without Tim Burton

As a seasoned gamer with a deep appreciation for the evolution of comic book adaptations, I can’t help but feel a sense of gratitude towards Michael Keaton and Tim Burton for their groundbreaking work on Batman. While there was initial skepticism about Keaton’s casting, looking back, it feels like they single-handedly paved the way for the Marvel and DC universes we know today.

Initially faced with criticism for playing Batman in the 1989 film, Michael Keaton later came to believe that Tim Burton’s unique vision revolutionized the comic book movie genre.

Reflecting on my past, I can’t help but reminisce about the stirring role I played in Warner Bros.’ Batman, a project that drew passionate protests from approximately 50,000 comic book enthusiasts back then, as I shared in a recent chat with GQ.

“Keaton praised Burton’s decision to cast him as the superhero, despite the controversy. He said, ‘Tim truly deserves immense recognition. He revolutionized everything.’ In a way I can’t express but strongly believe, there might not be a Marvel or DC universe today without Tim Burton. Despite being doubted and questioned, he paved the way.”

“The actor added, ‘He deserves more recognition for saying, ‘Yes, that’s Michael,’ when others were surprised.’ People reacted, ‘Really? You worked with him in Beetlejuice?’ However, I believe it was Tim who recognized Keaton from his role in Clean and Sober. That decision to take on a serious role was brave, but it seems he didn’t receive enough appreciation for it.”

Additionally, Burton commended Keaton for his unique vitality, which was a key factor in wanting him to star in “Batman“. In an interview with GQ, the director expressed, “When you gaze into his eyes, he appears intelligent, intimidating, insane, and everything else simultaneously.”

Keaton’s portrayal of Batman, as seen in the movies, has been widely recognized as one of the finest interpretations of the superhero character. While other talented actors like George Clooney, Christian Bale, Ben Affleck, and Robert Pattinson have also donned the Batsuit in subsequent films, Keaton’s version stands out. Remarkably, the actor revisited his role as Batman in 2023’s “The Flash” and was initially cast for the now-abandoned “Batgirl” film by Warner Bros.

Regarding if Keaton was disheartened that the Batgirl movie was canceled, he jokingly stated, “Not at all. It was just a big, fun project with a decent paycheck.”

However, it’s worth mentioning that the actor expressed sympathy towards directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah of the movie Batgirl, saying, “I have a soft spot for them. They’re decent individuals. I hope they do well. I believe they were upset, which in turn made me feel sad.” Regarding himself, he simply stated, “I’m fine.”

Regarding his portrayal of Batman as a whole, the star of Spotlight expressed that he feels “quite proud, truthfully, as I enjoy proving people wrong. It’s entertaining for me.”

Burton’s Batman went on to win an Oscar in 1990 for best art direction-set decoration.
