A skillful actress is easily identifiable by her ability to seamlessly shift between roles and transform herself to such an extent that she becomes almost unrecognizable. In Michelle Randolph‘s case, she impressively portrayed two distinct characters within the Taylor Sheridan cinematic world without many viewers realizing it had occurred.

In 1923, Randolph played Elizabeth Strafford, a resilient and strong-willed partner for Jack Dutton (Darren Mann), who faced one hardship after another. Fans of 1923 might be surprised to see Randolph in the role of Ainsley Norris on Landman, the daughter of Tommy and Angela Norris (portrayed by Billy Bob Thornton and Ali Larter). While Ainsley and Elizabeth are quite distinct in many aspects, there are similarities if you know where to find them.

In the role of Elizabeth Strafford in 1923, Michelle Randolph depicted a woman who had limited experience with ranch life due to her upbringing on the East Coast. Throughout her youth and into her relationship with Jack Dutton, Elizabeth faced hardships such as a gunshot wound, miscarriage, wolf attack, and the loss of her partner. By the end of Season 2 of 1923, Elizabeth chose to leave Montana because, as Randolph described, she could no longer bear staying in a place where everyone she loved had perished.

At the start, Randolph found it challenging to step into the world of Yellowstone when she was chosen to play Elizabeth.

Instantly established contact with Elizabeth. During the audition, we performed some initial scenes depicting her deep disappointment over her wedding being delayed. Instead of focusing on her sadness, I aimed to demonstrate her resilience rather than delve into a sob story.

As Randolph found herself drawn to her character, Elizabeth, she was just as taken aback as everyone else by where her journey unfolded in the TV series, 1923. By the conclusion of season 2, Randolph acknowledged and identified with Elizabeth’s less conventional side, proving that she was truly put through a challenging ordeal, much like the resilient Dutton family is known for.

Ainsley Norris in ‘Landman’ Sparked Conversation, and Michelle Randolph Embraced It

17-year-old Ainsley Norris, Landman’s character, is a whole decade younger than Michelle Randolph. Much like the strong-willed Elizabeth in 1923, Ainsley is a young woman who appreciates life’s comforts and luxuries. Her parents, Angela and Tommy, pamper her excessively, reflecting her own bold and outspoken personality – sometimes to an overly assertive extent.

During the initial season of Landman, discussions often centered around Ainsley’s revealing attire and seemingly loose boundaries. However, Randolph was intent on portraying Ainsley as more than just a troublesome character or object of desire. As she told Decider, “I aimed to explore the kind of young woman who speaks as Ainsley does… I wanted to uncover the humanity within her.

Ainsley proved to be a testing character for Randolph, who found the part intriguing and believed it would provide plenty of entertainment. Additionally, collaborating with Taylor Sheridan was an added bonus, but even she was taken aback by the scene where Ainsley and her father, Tommy, talked about sex guidelines. In an interview with TheWrap, Randolph expressed:

“Working on this character was a challenge for me, but I found it engaging and thought it would be a lot of fun to bring her to life. Collaborating with Taylor Sheridan was another perk, but the scene where Ainsley and her father, Tommy, discussed sex rules really took us all by surprise.

In that instant, I found myself questioning how I could possibly maintain composure while addressing Billy, all the while feeling distinctly like Ainsley instead of Michelle. After all, as Michelle, such a statement would never be directed at my father. Let’s make this clear: At some point, I could no longer suppress a blush and we both started to giggle, because the situation was simply too amusing to resist.

But We’re Glad She Chose Scripted TV Instead

Michelle Randolph’s sibling, Cassie, might be recognized by fans of reality television. This fellow Californian won Season 23 of “The Bachelor” and got engaged to Colton Underwood, although their romance didn’t endure. During the family visits on “The Bachelor,” Colton didn’t seem to win over Cassie’s family, particularly her father, who expressed, “I could sense that Colton was being affectionate with Cassie. I’m not sure if that’s how he behaves with all the women he dates. We don’t know him well. He seemed like a man with questionable intentions.
