The Thanksgiving Day Box Office Was Stuffed
The musical film “Wicked” was still humming a profitable tune over Thanksgiving Day, earning $16.9 million and maintaining a strong position at the box office with a minimal drop of less than 19% from the previous day. This places it second only to the highest Thanksgiving Day gross ever, making for quite an impressive boast. Universal Pictures expects the film’s five-day weekend total to reach $105.6 million, a figure that would put its domestic earnings around $245-250 million by the end of the weekend. With awards season on the horizon, “Wicked” is poised for longevity at the box office well into the new year and will likely receive some recognition, further boosting its profits.
Enthusiasts of action movies were also satisfied with their meals, as Gladiator II made $6.7 million on Thanksgiving, a slight increase from the $6.6 million it earned the day before. Interestingly, these Thanksgiving Day grosses are impressive because they’re usually not the highest of the holiday period, but the trend was reversed yesterday. Gladiator II has been maintaining its performance, as it wasn’t anticipated to match the daily earnings of Moana 2 or Wicked.
