As a seasoned gamer who’s spent countless hours immersed in the virtual world of crime dramas, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation as the 2025 Golden Globes approach. The nominations have been announced, and the limited series that has truly captured my attention is none other than “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.
The critically acclaimed Netflix show, titled “Monsters: The Story of Lyle and Erik Menendez“, has made a strong impact during this year’s award season. This limited series garnered an impressive three nominations for the 2025 Golden Globes, which were unveiled in Los Angeles on Monday. As the real-life Menendez brothers’ fate continues to be determined by the city’s new chief law enforcement officer, their story has become a captivating topic of discussion in the world of entertainment.
The horror series “Monsters” has been recognized among the year’s top TV honors, competing in the category of Best Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Television Movie. Two talented actors from this show have also received acting nominations. Cooper Koch, a newcomer who plays Erik Menendez, is nominated for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Limited Series. Veteran actor Javier Bardem, known for his spine-chilling portrayal of José Menendez, has been nominated for Best Male Actor in a Supporting Role in a Limited, Anthology Series or Television Movie.
In his new role in “Monsters,” which propelled him to fame, J.K. Simmons is going head-to-head with tough rivals in his category. These include Colin Farrell from “The Penguin,” Richard Gadd of “Baby Reindeer,” Kevin Kline in “Disclaimer,” Ewan McGregor in “A Gentleman in Moscow,” and Andrew Scott from “Ripley.” Simmons garnered universal praise for his performance, particularly in the standout bottle episode, “The Hurt Man,” where he shares the screen with Ari Graynor as Leslie Abramson, a defense attorney. The 33-minute episode is a continuous, slow zoom into Simmons’ face as Erik recounts the alleged 12 years of sexual, physical, and mental abuse that led him to commit matricide.
In an interview, Kich shared with The Hollywood Reporter that he always had the script for the episode on hand as he moved around while getting ready for filming.
He shared that he reads it daily, often before retiring for the night, and he strives to visualize the tales and recollections as if he were in the narrator’s shoes. This is his method of engagement.
As a devoted admirer, I find myself in awe of Javier Bardem’s versatile acting prowess that transcends the boundaries of television genres – drama and comedy alike. However, it seems he has some fierce competition ahead as he goes up against established legends like Tadanobu Asano (from Shogun), Harrison Ford (Shrinking), Jack Lowden (Slow Horses), Diego Luna (La Máquina), and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Bear).
The leading three nominations for its cast mark a significant achievement for Ryan Murphy’s controversial and popular show. However, the Menendez brothers, their family members, and supporters argue that the series overly dramatizes and distorts the characters of the young men, labeling it as “a grotesque shock drama” filled with untruths. In response to the criticism, Murphy defended his work, stating that the brothers should be sending him flowers for the renewed attention, as they haven’t received such focus in three decades.
The TV show “Monsters” premiered as the Menendez brothers petition for their release after spending 34 years in prison; these brothers were convicted of murdering their parents during their second joint trial and received sentences of life imprisonment without parole. However, fresh evidence suggesting they suffered sexual abuse at the hands of their father ignited a public movement advocating for their release. This movement inspired the creation of Murphy’s series, a Netflix documentary, and even prompted former Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón to consider granting them clemency.
The question is whether the Monsters (a reference to some potential evidence or argument) could aid the Menendez brothers in their long-term quest for freedom from prison, which they’ve been in for 34 years. Multiple legal strategies are being explored within the California justice system, driven by both their lawyers and city officials. However, the fate of one of these strategies now hangs on the decision of incoming Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman, who has indicated he will make a determination on his recommendation in January.
