As a hardcore music and TV fan with decades of experience under my belt, I’m thrilled to see some legendary musicians and talented artists receiving Emmy nominations this year. The 2024 Emmys are shaping up to be an exciting event, with notable names like Billy Joel, Lionel Richie, Selena Gomez, Usher, Jay-Z, and Childish Gambino earning recognition for their outstanding contributions to the world of television.
Some notable musicians, including Billy Joel, Lionel Richie, Usher, Jay-Z, and Selena Gomez, earned significant Emmy nods during the 2024 Emmy Awards.
Billy Joel’s concert special, “Billy Joel: The 100th — Live at Madison Square Garden,” received four nominations during the recent award announcements. Among these nods was for Billy himself in the category of outstanding variety special (pre-recorded), making it his sixth Grammy win. In addition, Quincy Jones earned a nomination for outstanding documentary or nonfiction special as an executive producer of “The Greatest Night in Pop.” This production also received two other nominations. Quincy’s accolades include an Oscar and four Grammas.
Gomez has been recognized with two nominations for “Only Murders in the Building.” The first is for her exceptional performance as the leading actress in the comedy series. The second nomination comes for her role as an executive producer in the outstanding comedy series category. Donald Glover, also known as Childish Gambino, has earned acting and writing nominations for “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.”
Usher’s Apple Music Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show earned three Emmy nominations, one of which is for “Outstanding Variety Special (Live).” This marks the first Emmy nod for Usher, a eight-time Grammy winner, in his career. Jay-Z and Jesse Collins also received nominations for their executive production work on the 2024 Grammy Awards in the same category. They have previously won Emmys and this is their second nomination in this category, sharing it with fellow executive producers Ben Winston and Trevor Noah.
As a gamer, I was taken aback when Lady Gaga’s “Gaga Chromatica Ball” didn’t receive the recognition it deserved with any nominations at the recent awards show. On the other hand, The Weeknd’s “The Idol,” which had faced criticism earlier, managed to secure a nod for outstanding choreography for scripted programming, courtesy of choreographer Nina McNeely. I was left puzzled by the snubbing of Bruce Springsteen and Bad Bunny in the guest comedy acting category for their performances on “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and “Saturday Night Live,” respectively.
Hans Zimmer gained three Emmy nominations, among them for the exceptional music and lyrics of “Love Will Survive” in “The Tattooist of Auschwitz”. He faces competition from Maya Rudolph for her “Mother’s Day Monologue” on “Saturday Night Live”, Sara Bareilles with “The Medium Time” from “Girls5eva”, and John Hawkes for “No Use” in “True Detective: Night Country”. The award-winning pair Pasek & Paul, who have previously won Oscars, Emmys, and Grammys, are also on the list. They were recognized for “Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did It?” in “Only Murders In The Building”, sharing a nomination with Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.
Nine Inch Nails’ Atticus Ross, recognized with two Oscars, two Grammys, and an Emmy in collaboration with Trent Reznor, earned two nominations for the music he composed for “Shogun.” This production boasts a remarkable 25 nomination nods in total.
I’m thrilled to be a fan of the remarkable Rickey Minor, who has been nominated not once, but twice for the Emmy Award in the outstanding music direction category. His nominations came from none other than The Oscars and The 46th Kennedy Center Honors. This esteemed category also acknowledges Fred Armisen for Late Night with Seth Meyers and the collaborative efforts of Adam Blackstone and Don Was at the 2023 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony.
As a big fan, I’m thrilled to share that Dolly Parton’s “Pet Gala” received a single nomination for exceptional picture editing in the realm of variety programming. On the other hand, “STAX: Soulsville U.S.A.” truly shined with two nominations, including one for outstanding documentary or nonfiction series. Lastly, “The Voice” continued to impress with five new nominations, bringing their impressive career total to a stunning 81 nominations and a remarkable eight wins.
On September 15, Sundays from 5 to 8 p.m. Pacific Time or 8 to 11 p.m. Eastern Time, live coverage of the 76th Emmy Awards will be broadcasted from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on ABC.
