NANZUKA Launches “PUBLIC” Art Platform

As a long-time gamer and art enthusiast, I have always been intrigued by the intersection of digital and physical worlds, especially when it comes to contemporary art installations. And NANZUKA‘s latest curatorial platform, PUBLC, is an exciting development that brings this fascination to life.

NANZUKA, founded by Shinji Nanzuka over two decades ago, has been a leading art gallery in Tokyo showcasing contemporary artists. With multiple locations in the Japanese capital, it has featured notable artists such as Hajime Sorayama and Keiichi Tanaami, while collaborating with Aisho Miura Arts since 2013 to establish AISHONANZUKA gallery in Hong Kong.

NANZUKA recently introduced a fresh curatorial project named PUBLC to its schedule. This new platform will showcase between two and three artworks annually, inviting NANZUKA’s expanding roster of international artists to engage in intriguing conversations in the vibrant urban landscape. For the debut presentation, Jean Jullien, a renowned French artist, has revealed an enticing installation titled “The Tank“. Located in front of the new Shibuya AXSH edifice, this artwork features a fish tank filled with aquatic characters drawn in Jullien’s distinctive scribbly two-dimensional style.

Raised in the western coast of France, the sea held a profound influence on Jullien. With family ties to fishing, his great-grandfather being a fisherman, and shared fondness for surfing and exploring the ocean, it’s no surprise that Jullien developed a deep affection for marine life. He enjoys sketching fish and shrimp, often sharing anecdotes – both real and imagined – of these creatures with his children. Regarding his upcoming project in Shibuya titled “The Tank,”, Jullien expressed his intention to merge factual information with creative storytelling.

The Tank will be on view in front of the Shibuya Axsh building in Tokyo until Spring 2025.
