As a global art enthusiast who has had the privilege of traversing numerous galleries and museums across continents, I must say that the unveiling of NANZUKA ART INSTITUTE in Shanghai‘s Pudong New District is nothing short of exhilarating! With my heart filled with the vibrant energy of Tokyo and a touch of the mystique of China, I can’t help but feel a sense of cultural fusion that promises to be as captivating as the Yin and Yang symbol itself.
In Shanghai’s vibrant Pudong New District lies the freshly revealed expansion of Tokyo-based art gallery, NANZUKA. Dubbed the NANZUKA ART INSTITUTE, this new venture aims to foster stronger cultural ties between Japan and China, while nurturing a burgeoning artistic community among Chinese youth.
The newly acquired 4,593-square-foot area will function as more than just an art gallery; it will operate as a museum showcasing a diverse range of artists, some of whom are not part of NANZUKA’s existing roster which includes Hajime Sorayama, Haroshi and James Jarvis. NANZUKA has given a sneak peek into its new location with a thoughtfully crafted robot sculpture designed by Hajime Sorayama, placed near the entrance of THE SUMMIT Tower #1, where the museum, offices, and cultural venues are situated.
The first showcase, titled ETERNAL LIFE, will present a diverse assortment of pieces from various timeframes and cultural backgrounds. These range from a clock tower mechanism created by the 11th-century Chinese scientist Su Song, to Osamu Tezuka’s Astro Boy, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, and a feminine robot by Sorayama. Notably, Sorayama’s work will have its own exhibition at NANZUKA ART INSTITUTE in 2025.
The idea of everlasting life, a dream shared by all humanity regardless of race or country, has been penned down by NANZUKA. Since death is an unavoidable reality, people have striven to capture the essence of life in its fullness. This aspiration, whether it’s scientists seeking to ‘create life’ or artists portraying it, is a significant mission that they feel compelled to pursue. In the year 2024, human endeavor has taken on this challenge by attempting to create eternal life using cutting-edge engineering, computer technology, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence. This could be interpreted as a time when the innocent human imagination propels us towards reality.
ETERNAL LIFE will open on November 6.
