As a seasoned gamer who’s been through countless hours of comedy specials, I can confidently say that Nate Bargatze‘s primetime debut is a game-changer! His journey from entry-level employee at the Grand Ole Opry to the world’s top earning comic is a testament to his dedication and comedic prowess.
Nate Bargatze is going primetime.
The highest-grossing comedian globally, as recognized by Pollstar, is set to debut his first primetime special – a one-hour variety show with a holiday theme, airing on CBS. Lorne Michaels and Broadway Video are confirmed as the producers of this event, which will be broadcast in December and also be accessible for streaming on Paramount+.
As a devotee who’s thrilled beyond words, I can’t hide my excitement about crafting this unique special. For years, variety has been a captivating interest of mine, and it seems scarcely present nowadays. My vision is to develop a show that families will eagerly gather around and enjoy together, and with this talented team at the helm, I couldn’t ask for better companions on this creative journey.
Although much of the specifics are still secret, Bargatze plans to record the special on Nov. 21 at the legendary Grand Ole Opry, where his comedy career began as a junior staff member. On this occasion, Bargatze will take the role of host, leading both the live audience and home viewers through an entertaining blend of stand-up, sketches, pre-recorded segments, and musical acts.
The announcement was made as Bargatze broadens his influence beyond stand-up comedy, launching Nateland Entertainment in 2023 – a company dedicated to creating family-friendly content. This venture is anticipated to create stand-up specials, along with scripted content for movies, TV shows, podcasts, and music. It’s important to mention that Bargatz’s remarkable success is recent, but his attempts to extend his comedic style into various fields are not new. In fact, over a decade ago, he transformed his act into an NBC sitcom with the assistance of Jimmy Fallon, though the network eventually declined the project.
To successfully produce his holiday variety show, Bargatze is teaming up with Mikey Day from Saturday Night Live and co-head writer Streeter Seidell. These two have previously collaborated with him on his popular SNL sketch titled “Washington’s Dream.” This sketch was a highlight of his well-received hosting stint, which, combined with an upcoming early 2023 Prime Video special, has significantly boosted Bargatze’s stand-up career. During this time, he transitioned from performing in theaters to filling arenas, where he now sets records at large venues like Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena. This year alone, he is reported to have earned approximately $90 million on tour, placing him at number 12 in overall live tour ticket sales, alongside acts such as Madonna and U2.
The news emerges that comedy specials remain a highly sought-after market, often referred to as a unique source of brightness in an otherwise dismal entertainment sector. This new production is set to be executive produced by Michaels, Bargatze, Erin David, Andrew Singer from Broadway Video, and Tim Sarkes and Alex Murray from Brillstein Entertainment. Bargatze’s next traditional standup hour will be streamed on Netflix.
