As a seasoned gamer with a heart full of nostalgia for the days of Crash Bandicoot and Jak & Daxter, I must admit that Naughty Dog has truly evolved into a powerhouse in the gaming world. Their shift towards more realistic adventure games like Uncharted and The Last of Us has been nothing short of remarkable.

Initially, the studio was known for producing cartoon-style games such as Crash Bandicoot and Jak & Daxter. However, Naughty Dog has since transitioned to creating more realistic adventure games, including the Uncharted series and The Last of Us.

It’s been officially announced that Neil Druckmann’s upcoming game isn’t “The Last of Us Part III,” instead, we got a sneak peek at his future project during The Game Awards, titled “Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.

At the Game Awards, the game was initially unveiled. Originally, there were rumors that it would be a fantasy game, but it appears to be shaping up as a grand, retro-style sci-fi game with an ’80s vibe instead.

The official description for the game reads:

The upcoming franchise, titled “Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet“, is being developed for the PlayStation 5 by Naughty Dog, creators of renowned series such as “The Last of Us” and “UNCHARTED“. This new game takes place millennia in the future, placing players as Jordan A. Mun, a formidable bounty hunter who finds herself stranded on Sempiria – a distant planet that’s been isolated from the cosmos for hundreds of years. To be the first to escape its orbit since centuries ago, Jordan will need to rely on her abilities and intelligence.

The game appears quite advanced, but it incorporates vintage sci-fi aspects such as CDs and numerous manual controls. Moreover, it’s been suggested that the game takes significant inspiration from classic science fiction works like “Akira” and “Cowboy Bebop”. In fact, Jordan’s ship bears a striking resemblance to an alternate version of Spike Spiegel’s Swordfish.

In the upcoming production, Tati Gabrielle from “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” will take on the character originally portrayed by Jordan. Additionally, we can expect to see Kumail Nanjiani known for his roles in “Eternals,” “Silicon Valley,” Tony Dalton famed for his work on “Better Call Saul,” and Troy Baker who has worked on “The Last of Us” among the confirmed cast members.

It’s noteworthy to add that Nine Inch Nails members Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross will also contribute to the music. They have recently composed the score for the successful movie “Challengers” and will do so for the upcoming film “Tron: Ares,” featuring Jared Leto in a leading role.

Naughty Dog’s Deepest Gameplay

According to a recent blog post by Neil Druckmann, director at Naughty Dog, they are aiming for Intergalactic to have the most profound gameplay the company has ever created, drawing on their extensive game design knowledge from past intellectual properties.

“The message states that the game aligns with Naughty Dog’s legacy of crafting a deeply emotional and character-centric adventure. The storylines we aim to deliver are matched in importance by our aspirations for gameplay.

It’s uncertain precisely what direction Druckmann will take this time, but it seems there are stronger similarities to Guardians of the Galaxy rather than The Last of Us. Given that the next The Last of Us game is rumored to be even more grim, Intergalactic could serve as a lighter transition for Naughty Dog before they delve back into Ellie’s world filled with fungus-infected zombies.

The specific release date for the next update on Intergalactic remains unclear, but at least its followers have a general notion of what’s coming in the upcoming year. It will be refreshing not to constantly field questions about The Last of Us Part III every time Naughty Dog shares something online.
