As a long-time late-night television viewer and connoisseur of comedy, I find myself at a crossroads with the recent changes in the landscape of my beloved nightly entertainment. The once mighty Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon has, alas, joined the ranks of its peers, airing new episodes only four nights a week.
As a devoted viewer, I can’t help but notice the evolving late-night television scene, and it seems like NBC’s “Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon” is the latest to adjust its broadcasting timetable.
According to NBC, starting with the upcoming fall season, “The Tonight Show” will air only four fresh episodes each week, from Monday through Thursday, with a repeat airing on Friday nights. Previously, the show had aired new episodes every day of the week, but it took a break on Fridays over the summer, and this is a change from that previous schedule.
For quite some time now, “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” on ABC, as well as CBS’ “Late Show with Stephen Colbert”, have been airing new episodes four days a week (and both hosts have also taken summer vacations in recent years). Similarly, NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” and Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” follow a similar schedule. However, until recently, “The Tonight Show” was the only exception to this four-day broadcasting pattern.
In recent times, traditional late-night programming has faced a test due to shifts in viewer preferences. For instance, at CBS, the “Late Late Show,” previously hosted by James Corden, concluded last year and was substituted with the cost-effective comedic game show titled “After Midnight“.
And earlier this year at NBC, Meyers’ show lost its house band as part of larger budget cuts.
Despite speculations, Fallon is not leaving anytime soon. He has recently secured a contract extension with NBC, ensuring his continued presence as the host of The Tonight Show up until 2028.
