A typical day for a human rights attorney spirals into a nightmare when he finds himself ensnared within the tumult of a border-town prison uprising. To stay alive, he must disguise himself as an inmate. Will he manage to fit in, or will his own questionable past transform him into a menacing criminal just like those who surround him? This gripping tale is based on real-life events.

‘Prison Cell 211’ Is Based on a Harrowing True Story

211 Prison Cell is believed to be inspired by a real-life incident: a brutal prison riot involving gang wars that occurred in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, in 2023. On New Year’s Day, 2023, heavily armed vehicles rushed toward the doors of Cereso number 3 state prison in Juárez. The gang members outside started shooting at the guards, and with this distraction, the prisoners launched a riot. Regrettably, many guards, inmates, and gang members lost their lives during this incident, while 30 inmates managed to escape amidst the chaos. As suggested by the trailer, the event was marked by intense violence and disorder. The series focuses on a human rights lawyer, adding another layer of tension to the story.

Apart from being inspired by real events, the movie “Cell 211” shares many similarities with the 2009 Spanish-French film (whose title is not specified here). Directed by Daniel Monzón and starring Luis Tosar and Alberto Ammann, “Cell 211” was adapted from the 2003 novel of the same name by Francisco Pérez Gandul. Just like the Netflix adaptation of “Prison Cell 211”, this movie tells the story of a new prison guard who, on his first day, gets trapped with the inmates and has to pretend to be a fellow prisoner after a riot erupts. “Cell 211” received an impressive “certified fresh” rating of 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, and won a total of eight Goya Awards (the most prestigious film awards in Spain), including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Luis Tosar, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Therefore, the new adaptation has big shoes to fill.

Once again, Prison Cell 211 is due to debut on Netflix on February 5, 2025.
