As a long-time fan of both comedy and sci-fi, I’m absolutely thrilled about this upcoming lineup! The premise of “Jackpot!” seems like a hilarious rollercoaster ride that I can’t wait to embark on, with Awkwafina and John Cena bringing their A-game.
By mid-August, the frenzy of summer movie releases typically winds down. But for top-tier streaming platforms, there’s always fresh content – whether it’s the latest hit on Netflix or an upcoming gem on Hulu. The challenge lies in discovering the finest offerings amidst the vast array of available content. Fortunately, we’ve curated some exceptional choices from this week’s new releases within the streaming world.
Hey there, fellow gaming enthusiast! This week, the world of streaming is brimming with exciting content. For instance, Disney+ is expanding its library with a kid-friendly animated series based on the iconic Star Wars saga. On the other hand, Hulu is offering an animated series that’s strictly for adults.
New Movies
The Union (Netflix)
“The Union” features Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry as ex-high school sweethearts reconnecting after 25 years. However, what he doesn’t realize is that she’s a covert agent, and she’s planning to enlist his help for a clandestine operation. While the plot might seem outrageous, if the action sequences are well-executed and the on-screen chemistry between the leads is strong, it won’t matter much to viewers. From what I gather, the cast seemed to enjoy making this movie, which can greatly enhance the overall experience. Excitedly, this film has become my top pick, and I can’t wait to see it!
The Union Premieres August 16 on Netflix.
The Woman King (Hulu)
In 2022, the critically acclaimed film “The Woman King,” starring Viola Davis, was largely overlooked despite being highly praised by both critics and audiences. It earned less than $100 million globally and failed to secure an Oscar nomination. This suggests that you might have missed out on one of the best movies of the year. The film portrays an all-female warrior unit in West Africa during the early 1800s, directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, offering impressive performances and action sequences. Make sure not to let it slip through your fingers again.
The Woman King arrives on August 13 on Hulu.
The Fast & Furious Franchise (Peacock)
As a dedicated fan of the Fast & Furious series, I have eagerly awaited the day when I could finally stream all the films in one convenient location. Growing up, these movies were a staple in my household, and the thrill of the high-speed action sequences and the camaraderie among the characters never failed to excite me.
The Fast & Furious movies arrive August 12 on Peacock.
Jackpot! (Prime Video)
Many of us would go to great lengths to claim a lottery grand prize. The film “Jackpot!”, directed by Paul Feig (known for his work on “Bridesmaids”), presents an amusing scenario where winning the lottery involves staying alive as everyone else tries to eliminate you and claim your winnings. In this movie, Awkwafina portrays the winner living in constant danger, with John Cena playing a character trying to help her stay alive. The film promises to showcase Awkwafina’s natural comedic skills alongside Cena’s humor, while also providing the ex-WWE star with plenty of physical challenges.
Jackpot! premieres August 15 on Prime Video.
New TV
Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures Season 2 (Disney+)
Numerous Star Wars enthusiasts first fell in love with the saga during their childhood years. However, now, even younger generations can embark on journeys through the distant galaxy. Starting this week, subscribers to Disney+ can enjoy Season 2 of Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures, featuring 11 episodes. This series takes place in the High Republic era, coinciding with the recent live-action show The Acolyte. Although tailored for children, these tales focus on a band of young Jedi as they learn valuable lessons and strive to make wise decisions.
Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures Season 2 premieres August 14 on Disney+.
Solar Opposites: Complete Season 5 (Hulu)
In today’s TV landscape, where shows can suddenly get axed, the achievement of Solar Opposites reaching Season 5 is quite impressive. Even with a notable voice actor swap before Season 4, it has managed to maintain its appeal for Hulu subscribers. The new season brings more mischief and introduces fresh characters, setting up to deliver exactly what fans have been anticipating.
Solar Opposites Season 5 premies August 12 on Hulu.
Bel-Air Season 3 (Peacock)
Initially, the news about reimagining “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” the popular sitcom that launched Will Smith’s stardom, as a dramatic series sparked many discussions. However, it’s evident now that the revamped version, titled “Bel-Air,” is resonating with viewers, as its third season debuts this week.
Bel-Air Season 3 arrives August 15 on Peacock.
Bad Monkey (Apple TV+)
With my Apple TV+ subscription, I’m confident that watching “Bad Monkey” will help me grasp its title meaning. From what I’ve gathered, it appears to be a captivating detective story laced with humor, thanks to the talented Vince Vaughn. He plays a suspected police detective who somehow gets entangled in a murder case and must navigate his way out of it.
Bad Monkey premieres August 15 on Apple TV+.
RuPaul’s Drag Race Global All Stars Season 1 (Paramount+)
As a die-hard fan, it’s tough to put into words just how massive RuPaul’s Drag Race has grown! We’ve got multiple homegrown seasons, but now it’s a global phenomenon, with versions popping up all over the world. And guess what? It’s time for the Drag Race World Championship! RuPaul’s Drag Race Global All-Stars gathers 12 past contestants from different countries to battle it out. Until I get a Paramount+ subscription to watch the international editions, this show gives me a peek at how the game is played worldwide.
