As a die-hard fan of K-pop and reality TV shows, I am beyond excited for Netflix’s upcoming docuseries, “Pop Star Academy: KATSEYE“. With my extensive experience binge-watching talent competitions and following every twist and turn in the K-pop industry, I can confidently say that this show is going to be a game-changer.
Despite releasing just two singles, KATSEYE has amassed a devout fanbase, as shown by over a million listeners on Spotify. A new Netflix series delves into the behind-the-scenes story of how this K-pop-inspired girl group was assembled in a reality TV-like fashion.
Titled originally as “The Debut: Dream Academy“, Netflix’s revamped version, known as “Pop Star Academy: KATSEYE“, features 20 contestants vying for an invitation to join the famed act. The show was announced a year ago and is set to premiere on the streaming platform on August 21st.
Six-member group KATSEYE, created through collaboration between HYBE (the management behind BTS and NewJeans) and Geffen Records, had their official debut in November.
The idea behind the show was twofold: it aimed to establish a team focused on K-pop techniques, comprising artists from various international backgrounds. Among them are Daniela Avanzini, Lara Rajagopalan, and Megan Skiendiel who hail from the United States; Jeong is a native of South Korea; Sophia Laforteza represents the Philippines, while Manon Bannerman is Swiss-born.
120,000 women initially tried out for the chance to appear on the show, but only 20 were chosen in the initial selection process. This group of 20 was subsequently reduced to 10 through further evaluation. After a live performance, the final six contestants were selected based on both audience votes and professional assessments.
The series provides an exclusive backstage glimpse into the creation of the live show, revealing the rehearsals, preparations, and even the selection process for eliminating contestants.
