As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the dystopian world of Panem and cheered for Katniss Everdeen, the news of Scholastic debuting the first look at the new Hunger Games book fills me with an exhilarating mix of anticipation and nostalgia. Having grown up reading The Hunger Games trilogy and watching the movies, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement as I reflect on my life experiences that have been intertwined with this captivating series.
Scholastic has debuted the first look at the new Hunger Games book.
On a Monday unveil, they presented the cover for ‘Sunrise on the Reaping’, the upcoming novel in the Hunger Games series, set for publication on March 18, 2025.
Suzanne Collins’ forthcoming novel takes us back to the world of Panem, set 24 years prior to The Hunger Games, commencing on the day of the selection for the 50th Hunger Games (or the Second Quarter Quell) in the early hours of the morning.
The book is portrayed by Scholastic as follows: “As the sun rises on the 50th anniversary of the Hunger Games, a sense of dread envelops the districts of Panem. For this year’s event, in recognition of the Quarter Quell, twice the number of tributes will be selected from their homes. Back home in District 12, Haymitch Abernathy is doing his best to avoid dwelling on his prospects. His sole concern is surviving the day and being with the girl he adores. However, when Haymitch’s name is announced, it feels as if all his dreams shatter. He’s ripped away from his family and his beloved one, transported to the Capitol alongside the other three District 12 tributes: a close friend who’s like a sister to him, an impulsive gambler, and the most arrogant girl in town. As the Games commence, Haymitch realizes he’s been set up to fail. Yet, there’s a spark within him that yearns to resist … and for this resistance to echo far beyond the lethal arena.
Regarding another trip back to the Hunger Games universe, Collins stated, “At the break of dawn during the Reaping, I was struck by David Hume’s concept of implicit submission and his remark, ‘the simplicity with which the many are ruled by the few.’ The narrative also offered an opportunity to delve further into propaganda’s role and the influence wielded by those shaping public opinion. The question of what’s real versus what’s not becomes increasingly relevant in my mind each day.
David Levithan, vice president, publisher, and editorial director for Scholastic, spoke about the cover, stating that it holds great significance for Haymitch Abernathy and many readers. He referred to artist Tim O’Brien’s work as creating another legendary Hunger Games cover, this time symbolically representing a key theme of the series: the interconnectedness of opposing forces, as depicted by the image of a songbird and a snake emerging from the same origin.
It’s been revealed that Lionsgate intends to create a movie based on the book “Sunrise on the Reaping“. There are discussions taking place for Francis Lawrence to direct this film, under the Color Force label led by Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson. Previously, Lawrence, screenwriter Michael Arndt, and producer Jacobson collaborated with Lionsgate on four movie adaptations of Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games novels – The Hunger Games, Catching Fire and Mockingjay. Together, these films raked in a staggering $3.3 billion at the box office.
Earlier, Collins wrote the novel “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” that came out in 2020. This book has since been transformed into a movie featuring Tom Blyth and Rachel Zegler.
