James Gunn’s “Superman” is one of the most eagerly awaited movies on the 2025 film calendar, not only because it kicks off DCU Chapter 1, but also due to its potential for offering a new perspective on the main character’s mythology, portrayed by an impressive cast of actors. Among these talented stars is Nicholas Hoult, who will bring Lex Luthor to life. Recently, Hoult has been hinting at his character and recently shared his thoughts about Superman. Interestingly, I didn’t anticipate enjoying his viewpoint as much as I did.
It’s now common knowledge that Mr. Luther holds no affection for the Last Son of Krypton, whom he perceives as a danger to humanity. This wealthy entrepreneur has long felt some resentment towards the hero, partly due to the admiration he receives from Metropolis citizens and people worldwide. At MEGACON Orlando, Nicholas Hoult shared insights about his DCU character during a panel. When questioned about Luthor’s reasoning being valid, he responded through CBR with a well-considered perspective:
If an individual possessed unlimited authority and could perform any action, a question arises: What occurs if their actions contradict the general consensus of what’s considered morally correct?

Superman: An Updated Cast List For James Gunn’s DC Universe Movie
To put it simply, I have a soft spot for Lex Luthor due to his multifaceted nature, which has been depicted differently across comics, TV series, and films. Rarely do I identify with him, but lately, the perspective of the actor who portrayed Nosferatu has made me ponder over Luthor’s viewpoint. It’s easy to dismiss his ideology as pure evil, but it’s worth contemplating how a powerful alien with its unique moral compass could potentially alter our world.
One aspect I admire in these comments is how it suggests Nicholas Hoult is investing significant effort into his role. Indeed, Hoult went to great lengths for the character, such as shaving his head and intense workouts to portray Luthor – clear demonstrations of his dedication. However, his recent remarks fuel the idea that he’s delving deep into Lex’s psychological landscape. It’s not surprising given an actor of Hoult’s caliber is known for his intellectual approach towards characters, so I was expecting nothing less from him.
From his remarks so far, it’s clear that the British actor enjoyed working on the DC Universe film immensely. He and James Gunn appear to have developed a strong professional bond, which was hinted at by the thoughtful (and cool) wrap present Gunn received from the actor. To be honest, I’m thrilled he got the role of Lex after auditioning for Superman in the X-Men series.
I’m really excited to see how Nicholas Hoult embodies Lex Luthor, and from the trailers and extra footage, he seems perfectly suited for the role. I have faith that his performance will be exceptional too. Recently, his comments intrigue me; it makes me question if I might find myself unintentionally siding with Luthor in the movie.
On July 11, look forward to catching Superman in cinemas as he takes flight! Don’t forget to grab your ticket to witness the battle between the Man of Steel and his archrival. And stay tuned for news about future DC films in production.
