As a seasoned movie reviewer with a penchant for discerning the nuances of acting and directing, I must say that Nicole Kidman‘s latest venture into the erotic thriller genre, “Babygirl,” is nothing short of captivating. With over four decades in the industry, she has proven time and again her versatility as an actor, and this film is no exception.
The upcoming erotic thriller from A24 promises to create quite an impact when it premieres on Christmas day, and before its nationwide release, lead actress Nicole Kidman is sharing her experiences shooting the film’s explicit scenes, as well as discussing her motivation for delving into BDSM themes. Directed by Halina Reijn, Kidman plays Romy, a top executive who embarks on a passionate romance with her younger intern, portrayed by Harris Dickinson from “The Iron Claw.” Essentially, it’s like a gender-swapped version of “50 Shades of Grey” with the roles reversed.
During a Q&A session at the London West Hollywood in Los Angeles, Kidman candidly discussed her role in the latest steamy thriller, sharing insights about immersing herself into the film’s complex sexual themes. She explained that this aspect is inherent to acting, as it involves a natural curiosity to understand and portray various aspects of human nature.
As an actor, I’ve constantly sought new horizons, venturing to places unexplored and discovering aspects of humanity. This time, it was a part of the world I hadn’t yet stepped foot in.
Although some might argue that the erotic mystery “Eyes Wide Shut” directed by Stanley Kubrick explored similar themes for Nicole Kidman, it was made 25 years ago and was more focused on Tom Cruise than on her. In contrast, in “Babygirl,” Kidman takes center stage, feeling more at ease with herself, particularly with a female director like Reijn in charge. This aspect of the production is one reason why Kidman found shooting “Babygirl” so captivating, as she felt completely secure knowing that Reijn was at the helm.
“It’s like taking a leap of faith, deciding to cast off all doubts and embark on this adventure with individuals I trust, within a genre we’re already familiar with. However, our aim is to venture into uncharted territory, particularly with a woman leading the charge. The director reassures, ‘I will shield you. Nothing in this production will make you uneasy, and you will be safe.’
Nicole Kidman Shows No Signs of Slowing Down
Since making her debut in the 1983 Australian movie “Bush Christmas”, Kidman has been actively acting for over four decades. Contrary to any assumptions that she might be looking to take things easier, think twice! In fact, the renowned Australian actress currently has a full five projects underway, one of which is the eagerly awaited sequel to the 1998 romantic fantasy, “Practical Magic”.
She is also adapting another book by Liane Moriarty, titled “The Last Anniversary,” for television screens, following two other adaptations: “Big Little Lies” and “Nine Perfect Strangers.” The latter will premiere its second season in 2025. After that, she will collaborate with Jamie Lee Curtis in the adaptation of Patricia Cornwell’s Kay Scarpetta book series for Amazon Prime Video. In this show, she will embody the main character, a forensic pathologist, aiming to replicate the success of “Reacher” and the upcoming “Cross” series, which are based on James Patterson’s popular novels.
There’s no denying that Nicole Kidman is one of the most active actresses in Hollywood today. With her latest movie “Babygirl” set to hit the screens soon, it will be intriguing to observe how she continues to push her boundaries. Whether or not this film resonates with viewers is yet to be determined, but given that she’s taking risks at this stage of her illustrious career, there’s no room for criticism about her choices.
