2025 is here, and Nike Basketball isn’t wasting any moments with their planned releases. In preparation for this week’s unveiling of the Nike Kobe 5 Protro “Year of the Mamba”, they’ve revealed not just this collection but also two future shoe drops. This adds up to a grand total of four sneaker launches and an apparel line, creating a capsule.
As we approach the Year of the Snake, it’s an opportune moment for Kobe Bryant’s “Mamba Mentality” to shine brightly. In the words of Bronson Yim, product line manager for Kobe footwear, “This capsule isn’t about wishing athletes a lucky year. It’s about encouraging them to face challenges, demonstrating their ability to embody the Mamba Mentality and achieve their objectives.”
The first look at the Year of the Mamba collection showcases two pairs of Nike Kobe 5 Protro shoes, available in “Eggplant” and “University Red”. The colorways feature a golden snake on the lateral side and Mandarin on the interior tongue lining, symbolizing the Year of the Snake. The packaging, too, has been designed in red with golden accents. The “Eggplant” pair is set for global release this week, while the “University Red” edition will be exclusive to China.
The phrase “Mamba Mentality” is showcased through this collection by Nike Basketball as well. A jacket that resembles satin with a quilted inside takes the lead in white, adorned with Kobe’s emblem at both the chest and back. On the rear, you’ll find the words “Mamba Mentality” along with a golden snake design, similar to that on the shoes. However, this particular snake boasts five rings representing Kobe’s five championships with the Los Angeles Lakers. This pattern is also seen on a crewneck, fleece pants, and t-shirt, available in colors such as white, black, and red.
Over the Lunar New Year, Nike is preparing to release two more styles of the Kobe Protro line. The first one is the “All-Star 2.0” Kobe 6 Protro which references Kobe’s NBA All-Star trophy. Its traditional snakeskin texture has been changed to a star pattern, and it features an off-white base with contrasting black. The second one is the return of the Kobe 9 Elite Protro “Masterpiece”. This version maintains its original color scheme, with a predominantly black look that includes multi-colored accents. Its design has been updated with a new traction pattern on the inside and a modern React foam midsole.
As a diehard gamer and sneakerhead, I’m thrilled to share that this week kicks off a series of exciting drops! First up is the Nike Kobe 5 Protro “Year of the Mamba” along with its matching apparel, which will be available on January 9. Next in line is the Nike Kobe 9 Elite Protro “Masterpiece”, landing on shelves on February 8. To cap it off, the Nike Kobe 6 Protro “All-Star 2.0” will hit stores on February 13 to celebrate NBA All-Star Weekend! Let’s get ready to add these iconic kicks to our collection!
