Now That The Venom Trilogy Is Over, I’ll Never Forgive The Tom Hardy Franchise For Its Gravest Sin

This past weekend was an unexpected turn of events at the box office for Sony Pictures. Their movie, Tom Hanks and Robert Zemeckis’ experimental film titled “Here“, failed to make a significant impact as it only managed to earn $5 million on its opening weekend. The film, which keeps the camera stationary throughout, received lukewarm reviews, contributing significantly to its poor performance. Meanwhile, Sony Pictures was still celebrating the success of the final installment in the Venom franchise, “Venom: The Last Dance“. Despite losing 48% of its earnings from the opening weekend, the movie still made $26 million, pushing its domestic total to $90 million and its international take to a substantial $317 million.

Pondering the potential box office revenue the Venom films might have garnered had they incorporated Spider-Man from the start.

With the conclusion of the Venom trilogy, I’m left puzzled about how Sony managed to produce three films without ever considering or attempting to pit Tom Hardy‘s character against his natural adversary, Spider-Man. Throughout promotional interviews for this latest film, Hardy was inquired as to why this confrontation never materialized – despite his frequent hints towards it. However, when asked about the matter, Hardy provided no explanation.

There are things that are candid responses to that, but they’d still be just guessing. You know, just guessing. I honestly don’t know. I think in that aspect, I think it’s way above my pay grade but not my interest grade. I want that too.

If they truly wanted to, they should have done it. But why wasn’t it done before? It’s puzzling that Spider-Man was never included in the Venom films. However, until Tom Hardy or co-writer/director Kelly Marcel share their thoughts, we’ll be left guessing.

Based on Tom Hardy’s repeated statements about wanting a crossover, it seems reasonable to infer that the studio may have thwarted his plans. It could have been Sony, but Marvel might be more likely, as they could potentially leverage this for the symbiote storyline in their universe someday. There are actually two feasible methods to incorporate Spider-Man into Venom films without violating the current contract with Marvel.

Use Andrew Garfield or Tobey Maguire

After the original Spider-Man actors returned in “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” it became quite simple for them to open a portal back to their respective universes. One of these universes could have been the Venom universe. However, this idea might seem inconsistent with the fact that Venom recognized Tom Holland on television during the mid-credits scene and acted as if he knew him. Yet, the hint dropped in that scene didn’t lead to anything substantial, so perhaps the concern over continuity isn’t necessary.

From a personal perspective, I’d have preferred that Andrew Garfield carry on as the Spider-Man in this separate Spider-Man universe. He could have battled against Venom, Kraven the Hunter, Michael Keaton’s Vulture, an authentic Rhino (as hinted in the Kraven trailer), Morbius, and numerous others. This wouldn’t have affected Kevin Feige’s plans for Tom Holland and Spider-Man 4 in any way.

But let’s say Sony wanted a clean slate. They had a pretty good option there, too.

Introduce a Live-Action Miles Morales

Instead of pondering over the storyline of “Venom: The Last Dance”, let me pose a question after you’ve had your chuckles. Wouldn’t it be more appealing to have a side plot featuring Miles Morales, rather than dealing with Rex Strickland, Area 51, Mrs. Chen in Las Vegas, the traveling hippies led by Rhys Ifans (who is The Lizard in this universe), but we never learn about that connection?

As a gaming enthusiast, I’d say: If done right, the Venom movies, along with other Sony Spider-Man flicks, hold immense potential to introduce Miles Morales in live-action form. The animated Spider-Verse has already made Miles a household name. Now, if Sony had wanted a Spider-Man for their Venom series without interfering with Marvel’s MCU plans, Miles could have been the perfect fit.

Instead, what we ended up with were three Venom films devoid of any Spider-Man presence, despite hints and teasers suggesting otherwise. Strangely enough, not a single scene featuring Spider-Man or even his nemesis, Venom, was included. This baffles me, it’s like creating two Batmanless Joker movies… or none featuring The Joker himself.

Talk about a terrible idea.

As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t wait to catch Venom: The Last Dance on the big screen, but when it comes to your next cinema adventure, here’s a peek at some exciting movies slated for release in 2024! This way, you can plan an unforgettable night out.
