Octavia Blake’s True Ending Was in Season 5, Not the Finale

Among my favorite characters is Octavia Blake from “The 100” television series, but I must admit, I believe the show missed a chance to give her an ideal ending – and this happened two years prior to the finale. The seventh season of “The 100” has been met with criticism for many of its decisions, including Bellamy’s death at Clarke’s hands and Clarke’s dismal outcome. There have been numerous instances throughout the series that prompted viewers to stop watching, but the final season contains too many questionable choices one after another.

I must confess, Octavia is among the characters who receive a joyful conclusion in the series finale of The 100. Yet, her reaction to her brother’s demise seems uncharacteristic. Regardless, she plays a crucial role in saving humanity for a second time before the end. What’s more, she even transcends, at least until she and several other characters decide to stay with Clarke instead. All things considered, it’s heartening to see Octavia find redemption and be surrounded by loved ones at the series finale’s end. Nevertheless, The 100 season 5 offers a more profound redemption and conclusion for her character, albeit one that carries a heavier emotional weight.

Season 5 Was The Peak Of Her Character Arc

Octavia, from the series “The 100,” stands out as one of its most captivating characters, improving with each passing season. Her transformation following her arrival on Earth is remarkable – moving from a secluded and enraged teenager who feels homeless to a fearless protector of humanity. The journey between these two extremes is filled with intricate layers that define Octavia’s character. She embodies a unique balance of humanity, yet harbors a darker side within her. Witnessing both her pursuit of peace and her succumbing to anger and retribution keeps viewers enthralled.

In The 100’s fifth season, Octavia’s storyline experiences a captivating twist. This unfolds six years post the second apocalypse, when mankind is confined to a bunker, with Octavia in charge. Faced with the necessity of being merciless to ensure her people’s survival, she gradually loses her identity in the process. Power eventually becomes her driving force, transforming her into one of the antagonists for the season. This transformation leads her to a painful realization in the second-to-last episode that she has inadvertently destroyed Wonkru.

In the TV series The 100, Octavia has a chance to make amends before the end of season 5 when she comes close to sacrificing her life for those she had deceived. Remarkably, she survives this selfless act, but this prolongation of her character’s life might not be beneficial for the show. It would have been more fitting and impactful for Octavia to sacrifice herself at the end of season 5, considering how repetitive and anticlimactic her story becomes in seasons 6 and 7.

It Fit The CW Show’s Tone & Accomplished Everything It Needed To

In the fifth season of “The 100,” Octavia’s story reaches a satisfying resolution, though it may not be the most cheerful conclusion for her character. Given all that Octavia accomplishes in season 5, it seems fitting that she gives up her life to protect her loved ones and what’s left of Wonkru. This self-sacrifice aligns well with the grim tone of “The 100,” as the series consistently reminds us that no one is invincible. In fact, considering Clarke survived the end of season 4, having Octavia survive might seem a bit unrealistic.

In addition, Octavia’s last moments in The 100 season 5, episode 12 fulfill all the requirements for her ending. She makes amends for the damage she caused and reconciles with Indra and Gaia. She also stands firm for what she believes in — and for the family she found, even though she initially felt like an outsider. Her “my brother, my responsibility” enables her to empathize with Bellamy and grasp his perspective. Although they might have had a more satisfying farewell, their final exchange underscores that they still hold affection for each other.

In seasons 6 and 7 of “The 100,” events similar to before take place, but they lack the same impact. Many aspects in the later episodes, including Octavia’s storyline, are satisfactory rather than outstanding. Compared to season 5, her ending could have been much more impactful.

Octavia’s Story In The 100 Seasons 6 & 7 Didn’t Live Up To Her Earlier Journey

Her Story Feels Repetitive & Unfocused

Expanding Octavia’s tale past The 100 season 5 doesn’t significantly enrich her journey, as her storyline in seasons 6 and 7 falls short. Maintaining her character within the series provides an opportunity for a more comprehensive redemption arc, but ultimately it feels repetitive. A large portion of the final seasons finds Octavia on the periphery of Sanctum and the primary group of characters, focusing instead on developing her relationship with Diyoza and Hope. Although these relationships are intriguing, they don’t justify sacrificing a more impactful conclusion.

In the seventh season, Octavia once more saves the world and opts for peace, yet this seems to be a rehash of her story arc in The 100 seasons 3 and 4. Regrettably, the show doesn’t wrap up her relationship with Bellamy nicely; they’re at odds when Clarke takes his life, and Octavia appears unfazed by it. This negatively impacts her character development, which would have been stronger if it had ended two seasons earlier. It’s a shame, as this pattern is also true for the series as a whole, which might as well have concluded in season 5.

The 100 Season 5 Was A Good Ending Point For Most Of The Main Characters

“Damocles – Part Two” Was The Ideal Place To Wrap The Series

It’s not unexpected that The 100 season 5 seems fitting for Octavia, as its finale appears to serve as a satisfying conclusion for the series. However, following seasons 5, Octavia isn’t the only character whose storyline feels disjointed and anticlimactic in the subsequent episodes. The endings of Clarke and Bellamy in season 7 are deeply disappointing, but wrapping up the show with them listening to Monty’s recording and discovering a new world to inhabit provides more emotional resonance. Moreover, Monty’s advice to “be the good guys” beautifully captures the central themes of The 100.

The Season 5 finale provides a fitting and uplifting conclusion for Madi’s story, contrasting sharply with her troubled ending in Season 7. It also transforms Monty and Harper into heroes, which is how The 100 should have concluded its storyline. However, if the series had to carry on, it didn’t need to involve Octavia any further. Her narrative seemed concluded at the end of “Damocles – Part One.
