According to a reliable source, Apple Music has designated Ole Obermann and Rachel Newman as joint leaders for its streaming platform. They will be overseen by Oliver Schusser, as confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter.
In February, after spending five years at TikTok, Obermann stepped down from his role as the global head of music. During his tenure, he was instrumental in making TikTok a key player in the music marketing industry. Last year, Obermann engaged in discussions with Universal Music Group when they temporarily removed their catalog from TikTok due to issues regarding artist compensation and AI music on the platform. However, both parties reached an agreement in May of last year.
Prior to TikTok, Obermann served as the Chief Digital Officer and Executive Vice President of Strategy and Business Development at Warner Music Group, having previously held the position of EVP at Sony Music Entertainment. After Obermann’s departure from TikTok, Tracy Gardner assumed control over the company’s music division. In contrast, Newman has been a part of Apple/Apple Music for more than 16 years, starting her tenure with the company in 2009.
Music Business Worldwide first reported the news of Obermann and Newman’s appointment on Tuesday.
Apple Music is one of the top digital service providers in the music world and has been a sponsor and partner for the Super Bowl Half Time Show since 2022. This year’s show featuring Kendrick Lamar broke all previous records, with an average of 133.5 million views across various platforms, as reported by Apple Music.
