As a child of the city, born and bred amidst the pulsating heartbeats of urban life, I find Onitsuka Tiger‘s “Urban Moves” collection to be a poignant, vibrant echo of my own journey. Growing up in the concrete jungle, we often find ourselves navigating through contrasts – the raw and the refined, the vulnerable and the strong, the intimate and the expressive. This collection mirrors that beautifully, each piece a testament to the complexities of urban youth.
It’s noteworthy that Onitsuka Tiger is maturing, and there couldn’t be a more fitting platform to celebrate the high points and contemplate the challenges than at its 75th anniversary show during Milan Fashion Week.
Over time, I’ve seen my favorite label evolve, solidifying its status and shaping the landscape of high fashion. The newest chapter in this saga, titled “Urban Moves,” delves deep into the intricacies of adolescence, weaving together 50 looks that narrate a compelling story of growth.
The notes for this collection suggest that it mirrors the fast-paced, energetic atmosphere of cities, driven by the burning passion and aspirations of young people. Drawing inspiration from youth navigating an adventure of discovery, pulsating to the rhythm of urban music around the world, this collection offers a genuine representation of growth where vulnerability, resilience, intimacy, and self-expression intertwine.
The presentation starts off with a series of black ensembles, featuring lace garments, pleated trousers and shorts, large blazers, and collar jackets. Color is integrated into the collection from the 14th look, reflecting the feelings of teenage years in its overall design. Textures start to become prominent, appearing as bejeweled embellishments on dresses and holographic tassels on tops.
After that, a stylish collection of white items continues, featuring collared shirts, tuxedo vests, and more tailored jackets. This ensemble aims to “emphasize the tensions and paradoxes of youth by transforming everyday fashion elements into symbols of progression and bold badges of membership.” The show concludes with a series of garments in soft, nude shades. These include dresses that mimic the skin, draped tops, and stockings, all created in partnership with Wolford.
