As a dedicated fan of “Only Murders in the Building,” I was thrilled to hear that the show is expanding its horizons and moving to the Hollywood Hills for Season 4. With Meryl Streep, Steve Martin, and Martin Short returning, along with new additions like Eugene Levy, Molly Shannon, and Melissa McCarthy, I’m in for a real treat.
In its fourth season, “Only Murders in the Building” is leaving behind the title New York building and the city to move to the Hollywood Hills. The show will bring on board an impressive roster of comedy talents for this change of location. Meryl Streep is set to rejoin the main cast, while new additions include Eugene Levy, Molly Shannon, Melissa McCarthy, and others. They will all be investigating the murder of Sazz Pataki, portrayed by Jane Levy. However, it seems that one recurring character from Season 3 won’t make an appearance: Tobert, played by Jesse Williams.
I discovered Williams for the first time through “Only Murders in Alphabet City” where he played the role of the cameraman for Paul Rudd’s Ben. While working together on their documentary, a romantic connection developed between us and Selena Gomez’s character Mabel. We made a charming pair, but unfortunately, we decided to part ways at the end of season 3. He was planning to move to Los Angeles for an independent film opportunity.
While some viewers may have anticipated seeing a revival of their romantic connection in Season 4, Jesse Williams spoke to People and effectively dashed those hopes, eliminating any chance of a reconciliation. Here’s what he shared:
No, I’m not on that show anymore.
Williams’ answer was straightforward and lacked grandeur or fanfare. It’s challenging to determine the tone based on the text alone. He didn’t reveal much about the Hulu show, and there were no additional revelations in his response.
I might have an explanation for why he wasn’t talking much about his old projects during the docuseries premiere. Maybe, he was focusing more on promoting “Distilled,” which is set to release on AMC+ starting August 1. It makes perfect sense since this new project highlights Black entrepreneurs and aligns with his own passions.
Selena Gomez shared the single scene from “The Only Murders in the Building” that made her laugh uncontrollably, featuring Molly Shannon passing gas near Meryl Streep.
For the detectives keeping tabs, Jesse Williams’ brief comment may actually signal a shocking guest role in Season 4. Considering Tobias is reportedly in L.A., where the fresh crime occurs and draws Charles, Oliver, and Mabel, it’s reasonable to assume an encounter between them is imminent. Granted, Los Angeles isn’t exactly a small town, but the series did hint at Mabel possibly visiting Tobias during the Season 3 finale.
If Tobert is absent from Season 4 as we anticipated, that’s fine. But if he unexpectedly appears in Episode 5 or similar, taking Mabel out for an evening, I’d teasingly scold Williams for misleading us. Let’s just cross our fingers and hope neither he nor his character is implicated in any criminal activities!
Amateur sleuths can look forward to getting absorbed in the new mystery of “Only Murders in the Building” during its Season 4 premiere on August 27, 2024, which will be available on television schedules.
