As a seasoned gamer of global cinema, with years of experience traversing the vast landscapes of film festivals and international awards races, I find myself thoroughly captivated by Laurynas Bareisa’s sophomore feature, “Drowning Dry.” Having followed Bareiša’s cinematic journey since his debut with “Pilgrims,” I can attest to his uncanny knack for crafting compelling narratives that resonate universally.
Lithuania chose Laurynas Bareisa’s second film, titled “Drowning Dry,” to represent it in the international feature category of the 2025 Oscars.
The film centered around two siblings dealing with a devastating family catastrophe was recognized at the 77th Locarno Film Festival, receiving the top directing prize and one of its two acting awards for the impressive ensemble cast made up of Gelmine Glemzaite, Agne Kaktaite, Giedrius Kiela, and Paulius Markevicius. According to THR, the movie was described as “subtly chilling”.
Bareiša has a history of festivals and Oscar recognition. Their crime drama, the debut film Pilgrims, was honored with the Best Film award in the Horizons section at the 2021 Venice Film Festival, and it represented Lithuania as a contender for the category of best international feature film.
I recently discovered a captivating film titled “Seses,” originally known by its Lithuanian title, which translates to “sisters.” Interestingly, the English title is associated with a term outside of medicine that refers to acute lung injury caused by underwater accidents – a chilling parallel to the narrative. In an interview with THR, director Bareisa explained how he employed the recurring motif of dry drowning as a plot device to underscore different approaches to healing trauma.
He felt that Drowning Dry was “a good and unique name that is also a good representation of what the film is about,” he also shared. “It works literally and also [as a reference to the] themes of the film.”
Neringa Kazukauskaite, head of the Lithuanian panel selecting entries for the country’s international Oscar nominations, praised the film “Drowning Dry” for its innovative direction, distinctive storytelling approach, and exceptional acting cast. In a post on the Lithuanian Film Center’s Facebook page, she commented that in an international context, this movie reinforces the idea that Lithuania produces original cinema of high artistic value, capable of capturing interest and admiration worldwide.
Over the years, Lithuania has frequently entered films for consideration in the international Academy Awards category, yet it hasn’t received a nomination thus far.
