Pablo Larraín’s ‘Maria,’ Starring Angelina Jolie, Sells Wide

The fact that this film is based on the life of Maria Callas, a true-life opera icon, makes it all the more intriguing.


Following its debut at the Venice World Premiere, FilmNation has secured distribution rights for the film titled “Maria” throughout Europe. This movie stars Angelina Jolie as the renowned operatic soprano, Maria Callas.

The international representative secured agreements with Studiocanal in the U.K., Germany, and Poland, ARP in France, 01 Distribution in Italy, where Callas achieved operatic fame. Additionally, deals were made with Sun Distribution for Latin America, Spain, Portugal, and South Africa, Pathe for Switzerland, The Searchers for the Benelux region, and other territories as well.

Drawing from real-life events, the film Maria portrays the stormy, enchanting, and tragic tale of the world’s most renowned opera singer, as she recalls and revisits her tumultuous life during her last days in 1970s Paris. The Venice Film Festival premiered Maria, receiving an eight-minute standing ovation that was shared by Angelina Jolie and Pablo Larraín among others.

After premiering at the Lido, the movie will become available on Netflix in the U.S. at an unspecified future date. Larraín expressed his enthusiasm about collaborating with the Netflix team once more, who are known for their deep love of cinema. “This film is my most personal project to date,” he stated in a press release. “It’s a creative exploration and introspective portrayal of Maria Callas, a woman who, after spending her life entertaining audiences worldwide, eventually decides to discover her own voice, her own identity, and sing for herself.”

Maria is a film directed by Larraín and scripted by Steven Knight. It features performances by Kodi Smit-McPhee, Alba Rohrwacher, Pierfrancesco Favino, and Valeria Golino in its cast.

This film was co-produced by Juan de Dios, Larraín, Jonas Dornbach, and Lorenzo Mieli. The Fremantle Group served as its financier, with The Apartment, Fabula, Komplizen, and Fremantle handling the production responsibilities.
