Pace and Galerie Judin to Open New Gallery in Berlin Gas Station

This coming spring, a distinctive new gallery location is expected to join Berlin’s vibrant art scene. The collaboration between Pace Gallery and Galerie Judin has introduced a fresh gallery space in Schöneberg, which will be housed in a renovated 1950s gas station. Inside this repurposed building, galleries, offices, a café, and a bookstore managed by Die Zeit publishing group will find their new home.

Starting on May 1st, I’ll be diving into an exciting new space that’s leading Gallery Weekend Berlin! This fresh gallery is a joint venture by two amazing art spaces, and the grand opening will set the stage for a thrilling year-round rotation of exhibitions. Pace Gallery will host two shows each year, while Galerie Judin takes the lead with three. Can’t wait to explore this artistic journey together!

Constructed in 1954 during West Berlin’s postwar reconstruction, this gas station was left abandoned in 1986 and stood vacant until it caught the eye of Galerie Judin founder Juerg Judin, who recognized its unique potential for an unusual residence. In 2005, Judin bought the building, which, with architect Thomas Brakel’s assistance, underwent a significant renovation while maintaining the original modernist character. After serving as a home, it was transformed into a museum dedicated to German artist George Grosz from 2022 to 2024.

In the ever-evolving landscape of modern art, galleries have grown more and more crucial to the city’s artistic community. Established in 2023, Pace Gallery, a global entity with eight locations, set up its Berlin office under the leadership of senior director Laura Attanasio. This marked the first major gallery to establish a presence in Berlin, the German capital.

Attanasio expressed in a recent statement that he is deeply dedicated to Berlin and its vibrant artistic community. He feels privileged to display the work of his artists within this unique city building. He eagerly anticipates deepening our ties with Berlin, its residents, and its artists through our programs at this historic location.
