In some of my beloved Christmas films, Santa Claus often makes an appearance, but I’m not talking about the traditional, jolly, and innocent screen version of him. Instead, I’m drawn to the less conventional Christmas movies that portray Old St. Nick in a more unconventional way – one who isn’t afraid to bend or break some rules when necessary, and is ready for a fight if the situation demands it. The question then arises: which of these unorthodox movie Santas is the most captivating?
For two decades now, one of the most beloved romantic comedies ever made, “13 Going on 30”, has been delighting audiences, and it remains just as charming today. Luckily, this extended period has also brought about two decades of camaraderie among the cast, particularly Jennifer Garner, Judy Greer, and Mark Ruffalo. Less frequently do exceptional gangster TV series grace our screens than fans of the genre would prefer. Regrettably, the 2020s have seen a dearth of wise guys and ordinary criminals. Fortunately, we now have Tulsa King, a standout gem from Taylor Sheridan’s collection following the success of Yellowstone. The series features Sylvester Stallone as Dwight “The General” Manfredi, a New York City crime boss who has recently been paroled and is sent to Tulsa, Oklahoma due to lack of space in the Big Apple. Once there, he establishes one of America’s most profitable underworld operations.
The blend of science fiction and Western genres has turned out to be a challenging combination to perfect; drawing parallels between Westworld and Wild Wild West demonstrates the genre’s vast potential, as well as its shortcomings. Interestingly, even a movie like Wild Wild West can gain admiration over time and attract a devoted cult following. Although it didn’t receive the same level of criticism as the Will Smith sci-fi/Western, Jon Favreau’s 2011 film Cowboys & Aliens also failed at the box office and was generally panned by both critics and fans.
