As a fervent supporter of Pamela Anderson, I am genuinely moved by her journey and the transformation she has undergone throughout her career. Her role in “The Last Showgirl” is not just another act; it’s a testament to her resilience, determination, and the indomitable spirit that has always defined her.
Pamela Anderson shared her feelings upon reading the script for her upcoming movie “The Last Showgirl,” a film that’s sparked much Oscar talk. Directed by Gia Coppola, The Last Showgirl has Anderson portraying Shelley, a Las Vegas performer who learns her long-running act is ending in two weeks, triggering an emotional odyssey as it appears the world is denying her opportunities. Alongside Anderson, the cast includes Jamie Lee Curtis, Billie Lourde, Kiernan Shipka, Dave Bautista, Brenda Song, and Jason Schwartzman. In this film, Shelley seeks to understand what she should do next with her life as it seems all doors are being closed to her.
After the premiere of “The Last Showgirl” at the Toronto International Film Festival, Anderson had a conversation with Perri Nemiroff from Collider. She discussed what initially attracted her to the project, mentioning that, like the character in the film, she felt opportunities for roles like this had eluded her in the past, and audiences may have developed certain preconceived ideas about her. Recently, Anderson released the 2023 best-selling memoir “Love Pamela” and the documentary “Pamela, A Love Story.” The director of the latter, Gia Coppola, saw this and then sent Anderson the screenplay for “Showgirl.” Upon reading the script, Anderson claimed she was the perfect fit for the role and could envision herself in it.
You know, timing truly matters in life. I never thought I’d have the opportunity to embark on something like this. I was almost resigned to my fate of tending to my farm and making jam, believing that others might view me as ordinary. However, the release of the documentary and book opened new possibilities. Gia, a seemingly insightful individual, watched the documentary and graciously sent the script my way. Upon reading it, I was struck by an overwhelming sense that this was meant for me, that it was a calling, almost a matter of life or death. I felt compelled to take on the role, and I am deeply grateful for the opportunity.

Anderson gained popularity in the early ’90s, first as a Playboy Playmate and later as an actress. Her film debut was in “The Taking of Beverly Hills” in 1991, followed by a role on “Home Improvement” for the initial two seasons. In 1992, she earned fame worldwide with her role on “Baywatch.” However, in 1996, the simultaneous releases of “Barb Wire” and “Naked Souls” were planned to establish a thriving film career. Unfortunately, an unauthorized online leak of a sex tape featuring her and then-husband Tommy Lee caused a wave of public criticism against her.
She endured the brunt of the offensive humor, specifically being targeted with sexist jokes by a late-night talk show host. However, Anderson’s acting career seemed to be confined to cameos and spoof films like “Scooby-Doo,” “Scary Movie 3,” and “Superhero Movie” for quite some time. This all changed with the release of her documentary “Pamela, A Love Story,” followed by “The Last Showgirl.” Now, Anderson has the opportunity to control her narrative and reshape her public image.
In the film The Last Showgirl, Anderson has been highly praised for her performance, with rumors of an Oscar nomination swirling. This role echoes Mickey Rourke’s in 2008’s The Wrestler, which rekindled his career and even garnered him an Academy Award nod. However, performers who have received similar critical acclaim, such as Jennifer Lopez in Hustlers or Adam Sandler in Uncut Gems, were often overlooked by the Oscars. Nevertheless, these roles bolstered their careers and opened doors for new projects. Following The Last Showgirl, Anderson is poised to take on bolder roles that may deviate significantly from her previous work in the eyes of audiences. She’s already slated to star in a remake of Naked Gun, which could signal a fresh direction in her career.
