As a lifelong fan of Pamela Anderson, I am absolutely thrilled to see her receive the Golden Eye award at the 20th Zurich Film Festival! Growing up watching Baywatch and her iconic Playboy days, I never thought I’d see her tackle such a poignant and powerful role as Shelley in Gia Coppola’s The Last Showgirl.
As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that the legendary Canadian actress, Pamela Anderson, is set to be celebrated at the 20th Zurich Film Festival (ZFF) with the prestigious Golden Eye award, acknowledging her remarkable career versatility. In the year 2024, at the Zurich Festival, she will grace us with the premiere of Gia Coppola’s “The Last Showgirl.” On October 4th, we will gather to honor her with this well-deserved accolade.
In “The Last Showgirl,” which debuted in Toronto, I found myself captivated by Anderson’s portrayal of Shelley – a 50-year-old showgirl grappling with the twilight of her popular Las Vegas act. The Heartbreaking performance by Anderson, as depicted by THR, resonated deeply with me. It was raw and real, a testament to the emotional turmoil that Shelley experiences at this crucial juncture in her life.
Christian Jungen, the director of ZFF, praised Anderson’s portrayal in the movie, stating she deeply embodied her character. He mentioned that she brilliantly exposed Shelley’s inner world through her facial expressions and effectively made viewers empathize with her. In his opinion, this exceptional performance might even warrant an Oscar nomination.
In “The Last Showgirl,” Jamie Lee Curtis takes on the role of Annette, a friend and fellow performer to Shelley, helping her navigate through an uncertain future. Billie Lourd portrays Hannah, Shelley’s estranged daughter, while Kiernan Shipka and Brenda Song depict two of Shelley’s younger co-workers among the showgirls. Dave Bautista plays Eddie, a stage manager for the production who shares a past with Shelley.
After the conclusion of the Golden Eye award ceremony, Anderson and director Gia Coppola plan to unveil the film The Last Showgirl for the festival attendees.
Apart from Alicia Vikander, Jude Law, and Kate Winslet, other notable figures being recognized at Zurich this year are also receiving honors. Roeg Sutherland, a significant figure in CAA’s Media Finance department and International Film Group, is one of them. He will be awarded the ZFF’s Game Changer Award for his remarkable accomplishments and valuable contributions within the film industry.
The 20th Zurich Film Festival runs Oct. 3-13.
