Paris Olympics: WBD Channel Drops Commentator for Sexist Joke; Opening Ceremony Scene Draws Apology

As a long-time fan of sports and Eurosport’s dedicated coverage of major international events, I was disappointed to learn about the dismissal of commentator Bob Ballard from the Olympics team following his inappropriate comment about the Australian women’s swimming team. Ballard, with decades of experience under his belt, has been a stalwart of global sports reporting, including for the BBC.

Eurosport, a European TV and streaming company under Warner Bros. Discovery’s ownership, removed commentator Bob Ballard from their Olympics broadcast following a controversial remark he made regarding Australia’s female swimmers. The comment sparked widespread criticism online.

After the Australian women’s swim team secured the gold medal in the 4×100 meter freestyle relay, Ballard remarked that the elated athletes took longer than expected to depart from the swimming pool. He explained their delay by saying, “Women have a tendency to linger, preoccupied with their grooming routines.”

Lizzie Simmonds, a female colleague, commentator, and former Olympian, challenged Bob Ballard over his remarks during a live broadcast. “Really, Bob? Some men are doing the same thing,” she joked, causing amusement from Ballard. Shortly after, a 15-second video clip of their exchange spread rapidly on social media. Consequently, Ballard was removed from his position.

During a part of Eurosport’s broadcast on Sunday, commentator Bob Ballard made an unwanted remark. In response, Eurosport has taken him off their list of commentators right away.

As a gamer, I want to clarify my stance on the recent controversy surrounding X. I didn’t mean to offend or disrespect anyone with my actions, and if I did, I sincerely apologize. I’m a huge supporter of women’s sports, and I’ll deeply miss working with the Eurosport team during the Olympics. Wishing them all the best in their future endeavors.

As a dedicated gamer, I’ll deeply mourn the absence of Eurosport’s team in the second part of the Olympics. Wishing them nothing but success and good fortune moving forward. No more comments from me for now, thanks.

Ballard, an experienced journalist and sportscaster, has represented numerous European media outlets for over three decades at the Olympics, among them the BBC. In announcing his departure, the BBC referred to him as “a steadfast figure in international sports broadcasting since the 1980s.”

During the extravagant opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics on Friday, certain audiences took issue with a particular performance. This segment, which took place beside the Seine river, included drag queens, a transgender model, and a singer dressed as Dionysus, the Greek deity of wine. However, some religious spectators felt disrespected by this display, believing it mocked Leonardo da Vinci’s famous painting “The Last Supper,” which depicts Jesus and his twelve disciples before the crucifixion.

During an interview with French television, Olympic artistic director Thomas Jolly explained that the concept was to portray a “magnificent pagan celebration honoring the gods of Olympus,” and clarified that “The Last Supper” was not the inspiration behind it.

In an interview with Reuters, Paris 2024 representative Anne Descamps expressed that there was no intention to disrespect any religious group during the opening ceremony. Instead, the goal was to promote tolerance and unity within the community. We firmly believe that this objective was met successfully. If anyone took offense, we deeply apologize.
