Paul Feig Responds to Harsh ‘Jackpot!’ Reviews, Says Critics “Took the Biggest Dump on This Movie”

As a gamer with a soft spot for action-comedy films, I found myself thoroughly entertained by Paul Feig‘s latest offering, Jackpot! Despite the less-than-stellar reviews from the critics, it’s been an absolute joy to see this film top the charts on Amazon for four weeks straight.

As a huge admirer of Paul Feig’s work, I can’t help but revel in the enthusiasm of the audience for his latest action-comedy masterpiece, “Jackpot!”. Yet, I find myself puzzled by the less-than-favorable critical reception it has received.

On Tuesday, the popular comedy director, Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s guest, appeared on an episode of the “Dinner’s on Me” podcast. During their conversation, Feig expressed his affection for directing the Amazon MGM Studios film titled “Jackpot!”, despite some critics perhaps having unrealistic expectations about what the movie was trying to achieve.

Now I’m feeling joyful since our film has been the top-grossing worldwide on Amazon for four consecutive weeks, which is simply amazing,” Feig stated. “However, the critics weren’t kind to us; they seemingly poured their harshest criticism onto this movie. From what I gather from the reviews I’ve read, it seems like they were searching for profound meaning in our premise.

The filmmaker chuckled and said, “Fellas, let me make this clear – the concept for this movie is purely due to it being a Jackie Chan production. It’s an opportunity for a hilarious character to be in constant peril, unsure of their surroundings, followed by moments of endearment and revelation about their past. However, please understand, I am not aiming to create a political commentary on current American issues. I’m here for the laughs.

Jackpot! currently holds a 31 percent critics score on Rotten Tomatoes. It centers on Katie (Awkwafina), a former child star who wins a massive lottery jackpot and teams with protection agent Noel (Cena) to defend herself, as the masses are legally allowed to kill her until sundown to collect the money.

In his critique for The Hollywood Reporter, critic Frank Scheck remarks that the film bursts with an uninterrupted sequence of intense action sequences that impressively balance humor and extreme violence.

He notes, “It’s quite absurd, yet it manages to function, largely due to impressive fight sequences that could rival Jackie Chan and the debut of the hilarious duo, Awkwafina and John Cena, as America’s top comedy pair.

Film director Paul Feig, famous for films like “Bridesmaids” and “The Heat”, has completed filming for “A Simple Favor 2”. Both Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick will reprise their roles for this upcoming sequel set to hit theaters in the spring.

Earlier today, THR announced that Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried will be starring in a movie version of the highly successful 2022 thriller novel “The Housemaid,” with Ava DuVernay set to direct, under Lionsgate’s production.

During a chat last year with THR regarding the current landscape of comedy films, Feig advocated for studios to persist in pushing boundaries with more daring productions.

The director expressed his preference for R-rated comedies as the pinnacle of art, stating that they offer unparalleled authenticity. He argued that characters in these films speak as people do in everyday life, unlike PG-13 or PG movies where villains may not use profanity, making their dialogue seem unrealistic.
