As a seasoned movie buff who has spent countless hours in dimly lit theaters, I must say that Paul Feig’s latest directorial venture, Jackpot!, left me with a mix of emotions. The film, despite its underwhelming critical reception, managed to dominate the global streaming charts, much like a cat playing with a ball of yarn before pouncing on it.
The movie on Prime Video, titled “The Film,” was a major success, staying at the top of the global streaming chart for extended periods, even with some negative criticism from critics. Director Feig hinted that if there’s a sequel to “Jackpot,” he’d like to involve [Action Star X], who is currently one of the most popular action stars.
In an interview with The Direct, Feig seemed to unintentionally mention Statham while talking about who he’d like to have by his side for protection if he won a lottery in the Jackpot! world. “I’d call John Cena, Simu Liu, or Jason Statham and say, ‘I need help,'” Feig stated. When asked about Statham’s name being brought up despite not being in the movie, Feig playfully hinted: “Well, you never know who might show up when you call for help.
There’s always a sequel.
Absolutely, I’ve got a soft spot for Feig’s work, especially since we shared the screen in one of his top-tier films, “Spy” back in 2015. That action-comedy gem garnered an astounding 95% on Rotten Tomatoes and raked in a whopping $235 million at the box office. Let’s face it, I showed my comedic side in “Spy,” and with its outlandish and high-octane plot, Jackpot! seems like the perfect fit for me. If there’s ever a sequel in the pipeline, I’d be more than happy to jump on board!
Jackpot! Received a Very Mixed Bag of Reviews
The movie titled “Jackpot!” offers a witty take on a story where Katie (Awkwafina) finds herself chased by numerous individuals eager to claim the $3.6 billion lottery prize she’s just won. In terms of its tone and structure, it shares some resemblance with Matthew Vaughan’s “Argylle”. However, neither film quite managed to satisfy all viewers in their conclusions, maintaining a less grave demeanor that was not intended to be the most serious of movies.
On Rotten Tomatoes, Jackpot! has a dismal critical rating of 31%, but audience opinions are more divided at 51%. In essence, this movie seems to belong to the group of films that director Feig has been exploring – films that tend to be either loved or disliked. Notably, the film held a top spot on Prime Video for an extended period, indicating potential for a sequel. Naturally, the ending hints at a larger and even more chaotic story if a sequel is produced.
It’s quite likely that Feig might consider adding Statham to future projects if the opportunity presents itself, given his Midas touch in films. But remember, the actor has a busy schedule ahead with roles like returning to the Fast & Furious series, working on David Ayer’s Levon’s Trade, and persistent whispers about a potential MCU role. So, it may take some time for Feig and Statham to collaborate again due to his popularity and packed schedule. However, it might be worth the wait for such a collaboration.
